Durag Festival (commonly called Durag Fest) is an annual arts and music festival held in Charlotte, NC that was established in 2018. The event celebrates the cultural significance of Juneteenth, the American holiday on June 19 that commemorates the day that the last enslaved Africans were freed from bondage following the 1866 abolition of slavery in the United States.[1]

Focus[edit]

The festival focuses on the durag as a black culture staple[2]. The festival features food vendors from local and national African-American food and drink producers with an emphasis on local cuisine. The festival has previously included artist exhibitions, a Wave Check[3] contest, and other forms of entertainment, including educational activities and activities for children. The aim is to celebrate the history, heritage and culture of African-Americans.

Organization and Support[edit]

Durag Fest was co-founded by Lica Mishelle and Dammit Wesley[4]. The festival is trademarked and organized by The Ghood Kind LLC[5]. The festival has a number of sponsors and has been supported by local community artists and businesses throughout Charlotte, NC.
