Summary

Chronological history of the author's family can be traced back to the 10th century A.D. His earliest known ancestor, Purushottama Dutta, (https://archive.org/details/journey-of-the-dutta) was one of the five kayastha clans that migrated from Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, to Bally in South-West Bengal. Five Brahmin clans were also part of this group invited by the legendary King Adisur. These ten families were requested to settle down in Bengal and assist him in strengthening his administration, as well as to re-establish the Vedic religion. In the 14th century A.D., Tekari Dutta 12th in line from Purushottama, moved from Bally to an area known at that time as the Muzaffarpur Pargana. He purchased a considerable amount of real estate to become the first zamindar of the region. This place located in present-day Howrah district later acquired several names like Chandul, Mohiary, and Andul. The Nawab awarded him the hereditary title of "Chaudhury". The "Andul" section in the book carries the full available ancestry of Krishnananda Dutta Chaudhury, Akshay Chandra Chaudhury and legendary actor Basanta Choudhury.

Sometime in the 16th century, Gobinda Sharan Dutta and Hari Sharan Dutta left Andul with their families because of disagreements with their elder brother Ram Sharan. Gobinda Sharan became the patriarch of the well-known Hatkhola Dutta family of Calcutta; a family well known for their eventual success in business, and for their devotion & philanthropy. This book has a separate "Hatkhola" section assigned for this branch of the author's ancestry, including the ancestry of Bhaktivinoda Thakur, Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati, Prabhabati Bose (Dutt). Hari Sharan apparently moved to a place south of Calcutta which he has identified in a separate section "Other Duttas".

Very few Dutta Chaudhury families continue to reside in Andul. New houses owned by others have sprung up where Purushottama Dutta's descendants once used to live.
