Dwayne Miller (born October 1, 1989) is a Jamaican-born British entrepreneur, event organizer, inventor and author. He is a co-founder of British streetwear outlet TrendsetUK.
Early life and education[edit]
Miller was born in Jamaica, but moved to Croydon south London as a child attending Selhurst High School. He subsequently attended Saint Francis Xavier College, Clapham.Miller then studied at De Montfort University, Leicester where he studied Design Management and Innovation. Whilst a student Miller often promoted student nights which featured acts such as Newham Generals, also co-founding the student event Barfest.[1][not in citation given]
Career[edit]
Whilst a college student, Miller co-founded a fashion label entitled Kolor Skeme with friend Nathaniel Da Costa. The brand was selected to be ambassadors of Damilola Taylor Trust.[citation needed] The pair were invited to Downing Street to meet the then Prime Minister Gordon Brown in celebration of their work.[citation needed] In 2009 at Alexandra Palace, they won the inaugural Barclays Spirit of London Awards for entrepreneurship, on a judging panel that included Frank Warren and Timothy Campbell.[2][not in citation given][3] In 2010, Miller and Da Costa was invited to City Hall, London to meet Mayor of London, Boris Johnson to celebrate their impact on fashion and youth culture.[4][5]
In university he co-founded student event Barfest in Leicester alongside his childhood friends and partners in 2012. Working with clubbing brands such as Gatecrasher, Deltic Group and Hed Kandi, the company claims to have sold over 30,000 event tickets since its inception.[1][not in citation given]
2012 - present[edit]
In 2012 Miller was one of three co-founders of the streetwear outlet TrendsetUK. On Instagram TrendsetUK received 90k supporters, which include Kevin Hart, Nicola Roberts from Girls Aloud, Rita Ora, Wretch 32 and numerous Premiership footballers.[citation needed] Miller directly oversaw the development of the TrendsetUK magazine whose cover stars have included Little Simz, Sasha Keable, Cloth Surgeon, G Frsh and Stormzy.[citation needed] In 2013 the company produced two pop up events with American streetwear brand Crooks and Castles,[6] which then led to an independent pop up at Boxpark, Shoreditch.[7][8] Miller also oversaw the merger of Rip The Runway UK with ODF Clothing for the British version of Rip The Runway in 2013.[9][not in citation given] The fashion and music event first appeared at Troxy with music performances by Fuse ODG and Angel, with boxer Anthony Joshua amongst the crowd.[10][not in citation given]
Miller is also a graphic designer and marketer, and has produced creative development work for Nike, Sony and footballer Yaya Toure.[11][unreliable source?]
In 2014, Miller along with partners PH Group planned an urban arts festival entitled CurbanA.[12] in Milton Keynes at Willen Lake in August 2015,[13] with acts including So Solid Crew, Saxon Studio International, Newham Generals, Flawless, Section Boyz and Logan Sama.[14] the event was cancelled by the Milton Keynes Council, citing possible audience disruption as a potential liability.[citation needed] This led to an online petition with Change.org against what the petitioners claimed was discrimination and lack of diversity within the U.K event scene.[citation needed]
Recognition[edit]
Miller was invited to give a TEDx speech in his hometown by the TEDx Croydon division in November 2014,[15] coining the phrase 'Engipreneur' which stands for a combination of an engineer and entrepreneur.[16]
Miller was invited again to Downing Street[when?], as part of Prime Minister David Cameron's private Black History Month celebration, along with British designer Ozwald Boateng and footballer Sol Campbell.[17][not in citation given]
