James "Jim" Watts (8 August 1878 – 20 June 1957) was a British businessman.
Biography[edit]
James "Jim" Watts was born on August 8, 1878, in Cheadle, Cheshire, England. He was the oldest child of Anne Hadfield Browne and manufacturer James Watts, who's father was Sir James Watts, mayor of Manchester and creator of the Watts Warehouse. Apart from James, they had two more sons, Ughtred Watts, who died shortly after his birth, and Humphrey Watts, who became an industrialist and father of Felicity Peake.[1][2]
In 1901, the family moved to Abney Hall and Watts attended a boarding school in Oxford, before transferring to New College, University of Oxford. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and joined his father's textile factory, S. & J. Watts Limited. On September 11, 1902, Watts married Margaret "Madge" Frary Miller, daughter of his mother's schoolfriend, Clarissa Miller.[3][4]
Following a trip to Italy, the Watts' returned to Cheadle, where their only child, James Watts, was born. They soon moved to Abney Hall, where they were often visited by Margaret's sister, British author Agatha Christie, and her daughter Rosalind. Christie dedicated two of her novels, Hercule Poirot’s Christmas and The ABC Murders, to Watts and took inspiration from him for The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. His home was also an ispiration for the Victorian house of Enderby Hall in After The Funeral.[5] Watts died on June 20, 1957 at the Cheadle hospital. He was cremated at the South Ealing Cemetery next to his wife, who died seven years prior.[4] Their son, James Watts, inherited his father's estate of £136 628 and went on to become a Conservative party politician and member of parliament for Manchester Moss Side, before dying in 1961. He was buried next to his parents.[6]
