The European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC) is a pan-European distributed research infrastructure that provides access to marine organisms and the facilities required to study them. Established as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) in 2018, it serves as a global reference for marine biology and ecology research.[1]
EMBRC operates as a network of marine stations and institutes across Europe, enabling researchers from academia and industry to access the sea's biodiversity. It supports sectors such as blue biotechnology, aquaculture, and environmental monitoring.
History and Governance
EMBRC was included in the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) Roadmap in 2008. After a preparatory phase, it was officially granted the legal status of an ERIC by the European Commission in 2018.[2]
The infrastructure is headquartered in Paris and follows a distributed model. It is governed by a General Assembly and managed by an Executive Director. Each participating country manages its own "National Node," which coordinates the local marine stations and marine institutes, and university departments focused on marine biology and ecology.
Member Countries
As of 2026, EMBRC provides services across ten member countries:
Scientific impact
The infrastructure supports the Blue Economy by providing the biological material necessary for discovering new marine-derived medicines and improving sustainable food production. It ensures compliance with international regulations such as the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS).
Services
EMBRC provides a standardized framework for accessing marine biological resources. These services are categorized into:
- Ecosystem access: Access to coastal research vessels, scientific diving teams, ROV and AUV.
- Biological Resources: Access to wild-harvested organisms and culture collections (microorganisms, algae, and marine animals).
- Experimental Facilities: Use of aquaria, mesocosms, and wet laboratories for controlled environmental experiments.
- Technology Platforms: Specialized services in Microscopy, DNA sequencing, and metabolomics.
- e-services: Access to historical data series and marine data management tools.
Transnational Access (TA) Programs
EMBRC coordinates and participates in several European Union funded programs that facilitate Transnational Access. These programs allow researchers to use facilities in different countries, often with financial support for travel and subsistence. Key programs include:
- AQUASERV and AGROSERV: Linking marine resources to aquaculture and agriculture sustainability.
- IRISCC: Addressing research needs for climate change challenges.
