ESAC-Net, otherwise known as European Surveillance of Antimicrobial Consumption Network, is a central and comprehensive database for the European Union that focuses on reference data on antimicrobial consumption by 30 countries across Europe.[1]
Scope[edit]
ESAC-Net (originally called ESAC) collects data on antimicrobial consumption for systemic use (taken orally or injected, treating the whole body) in the community and in hospitals in EU and European Economic Area/European Free Trade Association countries.[2]
The data is sourced from national figures on sales and reimbursement, including any information provided by national drug registers. Sales data capture the consumption of both prescribed and non-prescribed antimicrobials, while reimbursement data only tracks antibiotics obtained with a prescription. Note, the amount of antimicrobials consumed per person is not being directly, but rather is being inferred by how much of these medications is sold.
Antimicrobials tracked are broken down into:[2]
- Antibacterials
- Antimycotics
- Antimycobacterials
- Antivirals
Consumption is measured as the number of WHO Defined Daily Doses (DDD) per 1,000 people, per day.[2] In addition to these figures, the number of packages of medication sold per 1,000 people per day is also collected where available. Population data from EUROSTAT, or from national statistic reports, is used to measure how many people reside in each country.[2] If the consumption statistics do not cover the whole country, the country is required to provide a figure indicating how many people they do cover.[2]
