The European Training network Of PhD researchers on Innovative EMI analysis and power Applications (ETOPIA) is a project funded by European Union's Horizon 2020 research program under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions grant agreement No 812753. It is an integrated doctoral training network project based on research in low-frequency conducted electromagnetic compatibility. There are six universities (University of Twente (UT), University of Craiova (UC), Polytechnic University of Milan (PM), Leibniz University Hannover (UH), University of Zielona Gora (UZ) and University of Nottingham (UN)), sixteen industry companies and institutes, and two international organizations (IEEE EMC Society Technical Committee 7: ("Low-Frequency EMC") and Nederlandse EMC-ESD Vereniging (EMC-ESD)) as participants.
History[edit]
The ETOPIA project initiative started in 2019 with the aim to research the interaction of electrical power/power electronics and information technology/communications devices.[1] The European Union funded the ETOPIA project in 4 years from 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2023 by programme the H2020-EU.1.3.1 under MSCA-ITN-EJD - European Joint Doctorates funding scheme.[1][2] As a part of MSCA-ITN-2018 - Innovative Training Networks, the aim of ETOPIA initiative is to solve the low frequency electromagnetic interference due to the introduction of new technologies resulting in the interaction of electrical power/power electronics with information technology and communications device.[3] On 7 January 2019, the ETOPIA project launched 12 ESR (Early Stage Researcher) positions.[4]
Objectives[edit]
The ETOPIA project is created to conduct doctoral training, scientific training and social activities involving universities, research institutes, and non-academic organizations. [1]
The scientific objectives are to develop and integrated methods to model, design, evaluate, measure and monitor the interaction between the electrical power system and power electronics. [1]Three main topics are non-conventional modelling and measurements, multi-domain optimization and EM-coexistence.[4]
Outreach[edit]
Entry articles in Wikipedia[edit]
From 22 to 26 June 2020, four ETOPIA researchers attended an intensive course on Science, technology, society and Wikipedia for PhD studentsWikipedia:GLAM/PoliMi/2020, online, by the Polytechnic University of Milan (PoliMi), Italy, with the collaboration of Wikimedia Italia. Four encyclopedia articles related to the research objectives of ETOPIA were published in Wikipedia.
- Black box model of power converter
- Switching control techniques
- Conducted emissions
- Common mode current
Interviews for general public[edit]
On 4th October 2018, Tele U Craiova TV station has an interview with Prof. dr. Petre-Marian Nicolae to introduce ETOPIA and its objectives.[5]
On 20th September 2020, an interview about integrating energy and communication systems in smart cities was carried out by Bright Cities. One of the researchers in ETOPIA stressed the research content in collaboration with another EU project Smart Cities EMC Network for Training.[6]
Technical articles about ETOPIA[edit]
Several technical articles within ETOPIA framework were published on the EngineersOnline website.[7][8][9]
Events[edit]
Summer School I[edit]
From 9th-11th June 2020, the ETOPIA Summer School was held online. Soft-skills and technical lectures were delivered.[10]
Special Sessions/Workshops[edit]
This Special Session and Workshop was virtually held in the IEEE International Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) on September 23-25, 2020. [11]
The workshop and special sessions related to the ETOPIA project were established as the following:
- WS02 (Workshop 02): titled "Conducted EMI and Power Quality Issues in Power Distribution Networks", part I and II;
- SS02 (Special Session 02): "Conducted and Low-Frequency EMI in Smart Cities";
- SS09 (Special Session 09): "EMI analysis in Power Applications", Part I.
