East Cork Choral Society

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

East Cork Choral Society is a choir for soprano, alto, tenor and bass, based in the East Cork area of Ireland.

The East Cork Choral Society was founded in 1979,[1] with Andrew Padmore (then organist and master of choristers at Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral) as the first conductor. The first performance was 'The Creation' by Haydn.[citation needed] In 1984, Padmore moved to Belfast,[citation needed] and the next organist from St. Fin Barre's Cathedral, Colin Nicholls, took over as conductor.[2]

As of 2016 the choir had approximately 60 members.[3] The group has sung with soloists like Mary Hegarty, Cara O'Sullivan, Finbar Wright and Fiona O'Reilly.[4][not in citation given] The choir has sung a number of oratorios over the years, including Handel's 'Messiah', Bach's 'St Matthew Passion', Mendelssohn's 'Elijah', and Elgar's 'Dream of Gerontius'. They have also sung lesser-known works, repeating Aloys Fleischmann 'Time's Offspring', first performed in 1985. The choir has sung in halls and churches in the Cork area and have visited Dublin, Kilkenny and Cashel and Devon, England.[citation needed] They have also joined forces with other choirs.[5]
