Ed Fancher
Ed (Edwin) Fancher (born 1923)[1] is an American journalist, editor, media entrepreneur and psychologist, best known as a founder of New York's Village Voice.
Media career
Fancher co-founded The Village Voice[2][3][4] alongside Dan Wolf and Norman Mailer in 1955. He worked on the Village Voice full time for 19 years, while also working a couple of days a week doing psychotherapy. After selling The Village Voice to New York magazine in 1974, its newly appointed editor dismissed Fancher and Wolf, leading to a legal dispute between the founders and new owner.[5]
The Village Voice ceased print publication in 2017 after 62 years in print.[6]
Psychology career
After leaving the Voice, Fancher became a full-time psychoanalyst.[7] He served as President of the New York School for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy[8] and is editor of Voices from the New York School for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis.[9]
Military service
Fancher is a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army 10th Mountain Division's ski troops in the Italian Alps[7] where he saw heavy combat[10] and was awarded two bronze stars.[10]
Personal
Fancher went to The Northwood School[11] for high school, graduating in 1941. He attended the University of Alaska at Fairbanks for one semester before being drafted into WWII. After returning from the war, he earned a degree at The New School,[7] where he studied psychology. He lives in New York City and is married to Vivian Fancher.
