Eddie Ng (born March 8, 1986) is a Hong Kong mixed martial artist who is based in Singapore and has been featured in numerous magazines and newspapers including the New York Post, South China Morning Post, Time Out and FHM. He has a professional MMA record of 7-1.
Biography[edit]
Ng grew up in Chester-le-Street in North East England but both his parents are from Hong Kong. His idol was Bruce Lee, and he taught himself Brazilian jiu-jitsu using instructional videos.[2]
As a child he was bullied for being Asian and his self-confidence suffered [3] but he became proud of his Asian roots after watching Enter the Dragon and set out to become a martial artist himself like his hero Bruce Lee.[4][5][6]
He made his professional mixed martial arts debut in 2007 against the much more experienced Lee Doski. Although Doski had already had 19 fights and faced fighters such as Paul Daley, Dan Hardy and Jess Liaudin, Ng was still able to defeat him by first round technical knockout.
Ng's second fight was against Jason Ball in 2008 and Ng won via submission early in the first round. His first loss came against experienced Swedish fighter Joakim Enkberg at Strike and Submit 10 in 2009 with Enkberg winning by second round TKO.
Ng fought Steven Fenwick in November 2010, although known for his self-taught BJJ skills he showed he his striking prowess by dropping Fenwick with a big left hook before jumping on him and getting the tap at 0:54 of the 1st round.[7]
In 2011 Ng relocated to Singapore and joined the Evolve Mixed Martial Arts fight team. He fought Yuan Chun Bo at ONE Fighting Championship: Champion vs. Champion at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on September 3, winning via KO early in the first round.[8]
In his next fight he stopped Malaysian Muay Thai fighter Jian Kai Chee with strikes early in the first round at ONE Fighting Championship: War of the Lions. Ng was scheduled to fight Arnaud Lepont at ONE Fighting Championship: Destiny of Warriors but suffered a shoulder injury in training and was replaced by team mate Brian Choi.[9]
The injury kept Ng out for almost a year and when he recovered the fight with Lepont which had initially been set for ONE Fighting Championship: Destiny of Warriors was rescheduled for ONE Fighting Championship: Kings and Champions.[10] Ng won with an armbar late in the second round.
His last fight was against Malaysian lightweight Peter Davis at ONE Fighting Championship: Total Domination on October 18, which Eddie won after just 1:46 of the first round by submission (armbar).[11]
Ng has celebrity status in Singapore where he has been featured on the front cover of magazines like FHM.[12]
