Edoardo Bruni (born 1975) is an Italian classical pianist, composer, and musicologist. His work combines concert performance, composition, and research in contemporary music theory. He is a professor of score reading at the Arrigo Pedrollo Conservatory in Vicenza.[1]

Education and academic career

Born in Trento, Bruni studied piano at the Bonporti Conservatory of Music in Trento, graduating under the guidance of Maria Maddalena Giese. He later continued his studies at the Rotterdam Conservatory (Codarts) with Aquiles Delle Vigne. He also attended masterclasses with pianists including Lazar Berman and András Schiff.[2]

Alongside his musical studies, Bruni pursued academic research in philosophy and musicology. He graduated in philosophy from the University of Padua and later obtained a PhD in musicology through a joint doctoral programme between the University of Trento and Paris-Sorbonne University (Paris IV). His doctoral dissertation, titled Sistematica delle altezze ("Systematics of Pitches"), examined systems of pitch organisation in contemporary music.[3]

In addition to his activity as a performer and composer, Bruni has also pursued musicological research, presenting studies on pitch organisation and contemporary musical theory at academic conferences, including the annual meeting of the Italian Society of Musicology.[4]

Performance career

As a pianist, Bruni has performed in Italy and other European countries as a soloist and chamber musician. His repertoire includes classical, contemporary, and jazz-influenced programmes.

Among his concert projects is The Goldberg Tour – 32 x 32, a series realized in 2023–2024 featuring 32 live performances of J. S. Bach's Goldberg Variations across Italy and Europe.[5]

In chamber music, Bruni has collaborated with German pianist Christoph Soldan [de]. Together they perform as The Pocket Orchestra, a piano duo specialising in four-hand repertoire and arrangements of orchestral works.[6]

He has also performed with violinists Ivo Crepaldi and Carlo Lazari in programmes dedicated to twentieth-century and contemporary repertoire.[7]

Cultural activities

Bruni is the founder and president of the cultural association Ars Modi, an organisation dedicated to the promotion of classical and contemporary music. Through Ars Modi, he has been involved in the organisation and artistic direction of music festivals in northern Italy, including Katharsis, a festival focused on contemporary classical and jazz music.[8][9][10]

Composition and music theory

Bruni's compositions include piano, chamber, and other contemporary classical works. His compositional research includes a personal approach called pan-modality, a system of pitch organisation based on relationships between tonality and atonality. The technique has been discussed in music publications such as Suonare News.[2][11]

His theoretical work on pitch organisation is connected with the compositional project Ars Modi – L'Arte del Modo, which applies his approach to pan-modality.[12]

His work as a composer is included in the Database of Italian Composers (BDCI), managed by the Italian National Music Committee.[13][14]

His theoretical work on pitch organisation is connected with the compositional project Ars Modi – L'Arte del Modo, which applies his approach to pan-modality.[15]
