Edzperanto symbol

The word Edzperanto is an Esperanto expression which is a compound of the words 'edzo' and 'peranto'; edzo meaning husband and peranto meaning agent or envoy. It sounds similar to the word 'Esperanto' and due to this it became known as a joking expression about the role of Esperanto as a tool for marriage or finding a husband.[1][2]

The wordplay Esperanto - Edzperanto was invented by Raymond Schwartz. It first appeared in 1923 in Schwartz's poem "La bona peranto" (The good agent) in Literatura Mondo.[3] The poem is about two friends who are talking about finding husbands; it finishes with the words:

Esperanto English
"Kaj kiam nin la pastro benas,

Gxi estas dank' al Esperanto!"...

... La dua diris: "Mi komprenas,

Por vi gxi estas ... Edzperanto!"

("And when the priest blesses us,)

(It is thanks to Esperanto!")

(The second said "I understand,)

(For you it is ... Edzperanto!")

In the following decades, the expression became apart of general language use.[4][5]
