ELGi Equipments Limited[1][2] is a global air compressor manufacturer in the city of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, India. The name ELGi is derived from the initials of the company's founder Lakshminaickenpalayam Govindaswamy Naidu. The company was founded in 1960 during the license-raj period. The company is also into manufacturing body-shop tools other than compressors. In the financial year of 2019–20 ELGi's income stood at ₹18293.92 Million (US$246.85 Million)

History[edit]

1960–1975[edit]

ELGi Equipments was established in the year 1960 by Lakshminaickenpalayam Govindaswamy Naidu. In 1962, the company partnered with Pumpenfabrik Uraca[3] in Germany to manufacture and transfer technologies for air compressors. In 1975, the company went public.[4]

2000–2010[edit]

In the years following the Airmate product line, ELGi was finding success in the air compressors market in India and Asia. 2002 was the year when the company developed the world's smallest screw air compressor followed by tank-mounted rotary compressors in 2003. In 2005, the company had another round of expansion by commencing operations to manufacture precision-engineered components. But the most significant move from the company came in the form of ATS ELGI Limited in the SIDCO Private Industrial Estate, in the town of Kurichi, in the Coimbatore district. It also added ATS ELGi, a wholly owned subsidiary for manufacturing automotive service equipment into its portfolio. By the end of the decade the company had centers in Middle-East and Brazil.

2010–2020[edit]

Post-2010, the company ventured into projects in the form of new product introductions and acquisitions across the world. In 2011, Elgi Equipments launched the first indigenously developed oil-free screw air compressors, and in 2012 it brought out its compact, silent, and energy-efficient Encapsulated Series (EN) of screw air compressors to the market.[5] In the same year, ELGi acquired Italian air compressor manufacturer Rotair S.p.A, US-based Patton's Inc., and set up a subsidiary in Australia and a country office in Thailand. In 2013, ELGi launched a subsidiary in Indonesia. 2014 was the year when it started the Air Centre Plant and Foundry facility in Coimbatore. During this time, Elgi Equipments launched new models of diesel-powered, skid-mounted portable screw air compressors for drilling applications and opened up an office in Malaysia. New versions of its oil-free reciprocating compressors and high pressure reciprocating air compressor for PET bottle-making were released in 2015. 2017 and 2018 saw ELGi relaunch its global products with new brand guidelines. ELGi also announced its aspiration to become the number 2 in the global business of air compressors and released the most silent versions of air compressors and Air~alert, a sim-based data transmission services. It also acquired F.R. Pulford & Son Pty Limited (Pulford Air and Gas), a Sydney-based distribution company for industrial air compressors. Pulford Air and Gas was one of the few old air compressor suppliers in Australia which dated back to 1925. 2019 saw the launch of the AB series and ELGi opened up its European headquarters in Belgium. The same year it won the prestigious Deming Prize and acquired Michigan Air Solutions with the ambition of increasing its presence in North America. In 2020, ELGi completed 60 years and announced the launch of the LD series Direct Drive Piston Air Compressor.[6]
