Elie Charbel Lelo Sejean (French: [lɛlo sɛʒɑ̃]; Arabic: ليلو سيجيان‎; born 5 November 1990)[5] commonly known as Lelo Sejean[6][2][7] is an Australian football midfielder and athlete, mostly of French-Lebanese origin.[8] He plays for Tacuary and competes for Sol de América Asunción.

He began his career at North Geelong Warriors in 2007 and moved on to Sunshine George Cross in 2008,[9][1][10][11] prior to the 2010–11 season as a trainee at Barracas Central in Argentina.[12]

In 2013, Sejean became the third Australian to play over-age football in South America after John Crawley (in 1990) and Victor Cristaldo (in 1993),[13] and climbed from Paraguay's fourth-tier to second-tier league,[3][14][15] despite suffering from a succession of recurring achilles tendon injuries from 2018 to 2021.[16][17][18][19]

Between 2013 and 2021,[9] Sejean endured sufficiently to perpetuate in the Asociación Paraguaya de Fútbol as one of few non-CONMEBOL players to do this,[20][8] and holds the longest participation as an Oceanian footballer in Paraguayan[21][22][9] and CONMEBOL football.[23]

Sejean started competing in athletics in 2014,[24] and earned national honours in the Federación Paraguaya de Atletismo in 2015, 2016, 2019 and 2021,[8][25] reaching a career-high ranking in long jump of 4 in Paraguay in March 2021.[26] He received coaching from Edgar Baumann.[27][28][29][30][31]

Sejean became popular in Paraguay after speaking in the country's Guaraní Language during television interviews with channels C9N and SNT which gained him national media attention in 2018.[32][33][34] In 2020, Deportes Ciudad del Este named him one of the most charismatic foreigners in Paraguayan football.[1] In 2021, ABC Color named him a novelty and peculiarity of Paraguayan football.[35]

Career[edit]

Early career[edit]

Sejean played Australian Rules Football before changing to association football, receiving coaching from Scottish and English trainers in his first years.[1] His career began in the youth ranks at Breakwater Eagles and WVSA.[36] He played for the school teams of Clairvaux Catholic School and St. Joseph's College.[1] In 2006 and 2007, he played for his under-16 state futsal team.[1] Sejean had Matthew Spiranovic as a reference, a school colleague, whom he watched on television at the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru, citing him as the motive for wanting to become a footballer.[1]

"It was the 21st of September 2005, I'll never forget the moment. That morning, on television I saw Spiranovic playing in the U-17 World Cup in Peru. That was the moment when I decided that I wished that I wanted to do that too. He was the example."' – Sejean speaking about Matthew Spiranovic inspiring him in his decision to become a footballer.[1]

2007–2008: Youth career and debut[edit]

In 2007, Sejean competed at Australia's national futsal championships in Canberra, followed by an invitation to form part of an Australian under-16 team to play in Spain, which was turned down due to lack of funding.[37][1] For the 2007 season, he integrated to North Geelong Warriors with the first-team and under-21 squad. The club competed the State League Victoria and the Geelong City league, in which Sejean debuted and accumulated 10 appearances at age 16.[9][1][38][39] His coaches were former national team footballers Eddie Krncevic and Robert Spasevski.[1] At the end of the season, he unsuccessfully trialed for South Melbourne Hellas, Preston Lions and Bulleen Royals.[1]

In 2008, Sejean joined Sunshine George Cross,[40] playimg with the first-team, the under-21 and under-18 squads. In January, he appeared for the first-team in a game against Frankston Pines as a second-half substitute with goalkeeper Martin John. In the youth teams, he was coached by Victor Cristaldo, Australia's second footballer to play in South America, who Sejean emulated.[1][37] At the same time, Sejean resided in the Melbourne suburb South Yarra and worked at McDonald's, sometimes at night, and after returning home would practice in the early morning at Goschs Paddock.[1] In an interview with Deportes Ciudad del Este in 2020, Sejean recalled that it was between going to Germany or Argentina, and was preparing with a Melbourne team to play at a tournament in Düsseldorf in 2008. He wrote to Bayern Munich to request that a scout watch him at the tournament and e-mailed Boca Juniors to ask for a trial.[1]

"I still have the e-mail from Boca Juniors, I went after that opportunity without speaking Spanish" – Sejean on his decision to go to Argentina[1]

Sejean would look up the youth team training of clubs as Boca Juniors and Banfield, imitating them in his own sessions.[1] He was also inspired by footballer Robert Stambolziev of the same age at Bristol City, whom Sejean described as the best Australian player at that age.[1]

First years in Argentina[edit]

2009–2011: Youth career[edit]

In 2009, Sejean moved to Argentina aged 18.[37] He lived in the Buenos Aires barrio Constitución which he described as a "dangerous place that was like the alternate 1985 from Back to the Future 2". However, he described the football experience in Argentina as a dream.[1] He resided with a Paraguayan family and learnt Guaraní. He played weekly five-a-side football and trialled with youth academies of Primera División Argentina teams Boca Juniors and Arsenal de Sarandí, saying that he barely slept the night before trialling with the former caused by loud music from dance clubs in his street.[1] A store clerk from Alfis Jeans on the Lavalle street in the Buenos Aires city district became a mediator between Sejean and Argentine clubs.[1]

In 2010, Sejean joined Primera B Metropolitana club Barracas Central for a brief pass as trainee until 2011.[41][42][1]

In 2011, he arrived in Paraguay for the first time,[43] residing in Ñemby city and living with the same Paraguayan family he lived with in Buenos Aires. In Ñemby, Sejean would go jogging at midday at Club Teniente Fariña to adapt himself to the Paraguayan heat.[1]

Return to Australian League[edit]

2012 season[edit]

In February 2012, Sejean played in a reserve game for Melbourne club Keilor Park.[1][44] He signed with Geelong Rangers for the remainder of the 2012 season.[1][45]

Arrival to Paraguayan League[edit]

2013: Debut season[edit]

In 2013, Sejean joined Paraguayan Primera C club Sportivo Ameliano,[46][47] where he was teammates with former Arsenal and Dundee striker Fabian Caballero and was also coached by him. Caballero trained Sejean well, gaving him the chance to play, becamoming a mentor for him and the most influential person during his career in Paraguay.[1][42] Sejean debuted for the reserves in a 3–2 victory against Deportivo Recoleta, entering as a substitute. Two weeks later, he made his full debut in the reserves in a 1–1 draw against Cristóbal Colón. Caballero was the Youth Team coach and asked Sejean to practice with the team to improve his level. Sejean reached the Primera C semi-final play-offs with the reserve-team.[48] His transfer remained at Sportivo Ameliano until May 2015.[48][49]

2014–2015: Temporary move and failed return[edit]

He unsuccessfully trialled with Presidente Hayes and River Plate Asunción before joining Serbian-founded Melbourne team Westgate Sindjelic for the 2014 season,[50] on a temporary transfer from Sportivo Ameliano until May 2015.[51][52][1] His transfer was a provisional habilitation issued by FIFA that ran for one year for Sportivo Ameliano to appeal not to free the player's rights to Westgate, causing transfer problems for him within Paraguay in 2017.[48] Sejean was sidelined for some months for an ankle injury in his first reserve game for Westgate.[53] He returned with more urge and practiced more at parks, filming his free kicks, passes and skills so to get back into Paraguayan football.[54]

In 2015, Sejean returned to Paraguay to live in Ciudad del Este, attending practices with Gremio Sol del Este but didn't continue due to travelling difficulty living at first in the city.[55] In June 2015, he trialled for three weeks with Cerro Porteño PF to not attain inside the squad.[56] Both failures marked his will to triumph.[57]

In 2017, Sejean joined Ciudad del Este and Paraguay Primera B Nacional club Gremio Sol del Este, a club who also played in their regional state league, the Liga Paranaense.[64][2][65][66][67] He signed for the first semestre of 2017.[68] The squad had to be filled with youth players because the adult players left the club when lack of funds, Sejean was one of a few players over 20 in the team.[69] He was coached by former footballer Víctor Pinto and also took up a role as his assistant coach for the club's youth set-up.[2] Sejean spent a lot of time with Pinto and trained with him in his backyard.[2] He played for Sol del Este's first-team on three occasions and once for the reserve-team against clubs in Alto Paraná, that the club withdrew its participation in the Primera B Nacional.[1] He was playing well as a winger departed the club to join Atlántida Asunción as the Liga Paranaense was beginning in June.[1][7]

Sejean's transfer came through Sportivo Ameliano, his last Paraguay FA club, instead of Surf Coast Australia, his last club in attachment.[70] Sejean and Sol del Este prepared the transfer solicitation to Surf Coast Australia that was faxed to the Paraguay FA.[71] By error of the Paraguay FA, they instructed Sejean's lawyer in Asunción that the transfer be made through Sportivo Ameliano.[72] He commented already to the Australia Federation about the topic and signing for a Paraguayan club.[73] The Australian Federation reclaimed this of the Paraguay FA.[74] To avoid problem and hold evidence, he saved all papers and receipts.[75]

In June 2017, Sejean joined Atlántida Asunción's reserve squad, with his transfer coming from Surf Coast FC Australia and not from Sol del Este.[1][7][76][77]

2018–2019: Primera B and promotion to División Intermedia[edit]

Whilst playing for Atlántida Asunción, Sejean worked as an English Language teacher at the English Institute in the Asunción neighbourhood of Sajonia and resided at the Hamaca Paraguaya Hostel. Everyday, he walked to-and-from training.[32] On 22 July 2018, he was summoned to the reserve-team for a game.[78] On 25 August 2018, Sejean was again summoned for a reserve game.[79] In 2018, Sejean began suffering from inflammation in the aquilian tendons due to excessive use but also for bad quality pitch at the club.[48] Here began an injury hit three year period between 2018 and 2021.[80][81] In the 2018 season, he was runners-up of the Primera B reserve league.[48]

In May 2019, Primera B side Atlético Colegiales signed Sejean from Atlántida Asunción. He made his first appearance in the same month as a substitute in a 2–2 away draw against Cristobal Colón J.A. Saldivar.[9][4] He joined the club through the team's Brazilian goalkeeper Carlos Águia, whom Sejean cited that improved his diet, he was also teammates with Ulises Coronel.[9] For 2019, Sejean required electrotherapy, infared therapy and other uses of sports medicine treatment for his aquilian tendons by the medicines at the Secretaria Nacional de Deportes.[48]

On 29 August 2019, Sejean completed a move to Tacuary, joining on non-contract terms without establishing a transfer fee to join another team.[9][82] He was taken to the club by Tomas Orué.[1] Sejean's playing chances were limited as the squad was made up of the club's youth academy graduates as Juan Núñez, Pablo Espinoza and Cirilo Mora, and other experienced players as Victor Matta, Anibal Argüello, Maximo Ortiz, Nestor Bareiro and Raul Estigarribia.[48] He was part of a squad which reached promotion to the División Intermedia for the 2020 season.[83]

2020: Stagnated in the Football League and Transfer Saga[edit]

In 2020, Sejean missed the first months of the year as result of illness and injury and was also parted from the Tacuary first squad,[48][84][85] though, was not transferred or loaned within the signing window.[48] In May, he recovered from illness and achilles tendonitis, preparing on his own to be selected for the 2021 Copa América.[86] He likened the experience to Bryan Ruiz at Santos.[48] During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Sejean maintained contact with Professional Footballers Australia and individually trained at fútsal club Corrales FBC in his suburb. His transfer remained at Tacuary due to the cancelation of Paraguay's lower leagues.[87]

In 2020, Sejean's transfer was offered to Copa Libertadores clubs LDU Quito and Cerro Porteño.[82][88][89][90][91] On 24 October 2020, a publicity video of Sejean captured attention of Cerro Porteño's captain Nelson Haedo Valdez, who demonstrated support to him through Instagram.[92] Contact with Cerro Porteño endured six months.[8][84]

2021–2022: Final seasons in Paraguay[edit]

Sejean's transfer saga continued into 2021,[93][94] holding contact with clubs in the exterior.[95] He again faced 2021 with illness and tendonitis.[84][48] He remained on the rosters at Tacuary.[96] In March 2021, it was announced that Tacuary would loan Sejean after he solicited a transfer request for this,[84][97] because of no reserve league.[9] He continued training by himself and did not attain a loan agreement with a club.[48] Sejean spoke that he was treated differently for having aimed to play at Cerro Porteño.[48] By medation of former footballer Gabriel González, Sejean joined agency New Course Sports,[98][99][100] and began training full-time with its players in May.[101][102] There, he was coached by González and Juan Paniagua.[103] He bettered his tendonitis when completed 90 minutes in a match.[12] He didn't attain any loan move in both of the 2021 Transfer Windows,[9][104] as Tacuary were promoted after finishing 3rd in the 2021 División Intermedia season. At late 2021, he underwent achilles treatment for tenosynovitis.[105]

In October 2021, Sejean announced that 2022 would be his last year in Paraguayan sport.[106]

In 2007, Sejean was invited to form part of an Australian under-16 fútsal squad to play in Spain following his participation at the Australian national futsal championships. Without embarge, the invitation was turned down to lack of funding.[37]

In 2018, 2019 and 2020, Sejean and his management were communicated to Australia's national team manager Joel Freeme.[86] He was suggested to Australia's team as an option for the 2021 Copa América,[86][107][108][109][89][46] from which the team eventually withdrew.[110]

In 2016, the Alto Paraná Athletics Association organized that Sejean be trained by Olympic Athlete and South American Javelin Throw record holder Edgar Baumann,[119][120] as he prepared to compete at a Federación Paraguaya de Atletismo Open Tournament in Ciudad del Este on 20 November,[6][121][122] in which Sejean finished in second place with a throw of 29.37 metres.[123]

"Mr. Baumann gave me everything, he helped me in everything and he continues to help me. I've always said that he is like a father"' – Sejean speaking about his javelin coach Edgar Baumann.[1]
