Elizabeth Keyton (born 28 August 1988) is an American Teacher who's online work focuses on Malayalam literacy and education. She has worked as an English as a Second Language teacher since 2009. She started studying Malayalam shortly after meeting her now husband in 2017. Since then she has gone to start the online persona EliKutty, creating Malayalam educational resources.[1]

Biography[edit]

Elizabeth was born in Anchorage, Alaska in the United States of America as the daughter of Christopher Keyton and Kathryn Richards. She completed her Bachelor's in ESL Education from Ashford University. She earned her master's degree in Educational Leadership from New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, New Mexico. In 2009, she began her career as an ESL teacher, traveling to Korea, Texas, New York City, and the United Arab Emirates.[2]

Elizabeth lives in Hanoi, Vietnam with her husband Arjun Ullas, who is a geopolitics and history enthusiast.

Work as Elikutty[edit]

Elizabeth began her Malayalam based Instagram in 2018 when seeking language resources. Using her training as an English teacher, she began making materials from the perspective of a learner and posting them online. Her content went viral in 2019, resulting in her starting a YouTube channel to reach a wider audience. [3]The name 'Elikutty" was a name based on a pun of the shortening of her name from Eliza to Eli, meaning rat in Malayalam.[4] Her content began as paper based notes, then evolved into tutorial videos, travel vlogs, and collaborations with notable Malaylees such as author Benyamin (writer), chef Suresh Pillai and singer Vipin Lal of Thaikkudam Bridge[5] Elizabeth also has featured social topics relevant to Malyalayee society, such as the distinctive range of Malayalam dialects and the normalization of multicultural couples. [6] [7]

Outside of social media, Elizabeth has given talks related to the preservation of languages through online platforms and the protection of minority languages.[8] In 2020, she gave a talk at TEDxHanoi detailing her experiences growing up in a conservative small town and learning the complexities of society after moving abroad. She also stated that social media platforms are the way to maintain culture, languages and practices of communities that are not served in mainstream educational curriculum. [9] [10]
