Elizabeth Kopel

Elizabeth Kopel is a policy researcher from Papua New Guinea.[1] She specialises in researching the informal economy, women’s economic empowerment, social development and urban settlements and housing.[2]

Biography[edit]

Kopel is from the Western Highlands Province.[3] She completed a bachelor's degree in social work at the University of Papua New Guinea in 1990, followed by a master's degree in social work at the University of Western Australia in 1992. She later completed a master's degree in project management at the University of Northumbria, UK and a PhD in social policy at the University of York, UK.[3] Her doctoral research, completed in 2000, focused on housing problems in Papua New Guinea.[4] She has lectured on social policy and social development at the University of Papua New Guinea and the University of Manchester, UK.[2]

Kopel is a senior research fellow and program leader of the Informal Economy Research Program at the Papua New Guinea National Research Institute.[5] She co-shares leadership of the Gender Research Program.[6] Kopel is on the board of directors for the Women's Micro Bank, a group working to microfinance to provide opportunities for women in Papua New Guinea.[7]
