Elizabeth Waterhouse is an American contemporary dancer and scientist born and raised in Upstate New York. She graduated from Harvard University in 2002 with a Bachelor's degree in physics.[1] She continued to studying at Ohio State University where she completed her Master in 2004 with a degree in dance. Waterhouse became a founding member of the Forsythe Dance Company and performed internationally in venues like the Brooklyn Academy of Music[2][3][4], Festspielhaus Hellerau in Dresden[5], Halles de Schaerbeek in Brussels[6] and Tate Modern in London[7]. Her performances have been aired on national television in France and Germany.[8] Waterhouse is known for her interest in reconciling art and science.[9]

Professional Career[edit]

Dance[edit]

Waterhouse started her career as a professional dancer in Boston, Massachusetts with the Harvard Contemporary Dance Ensemble. She performed Marcus Schulkind's solo Courting the Hippogriff.[10] The same year she moved to Germany to join Ballet Frankfurt. In 2005 Waterhouse became a founding member of The Forsythe Company in Frankfurt am Main, where she performed until 2013.[11] With the Forsythe Company she performed "Three atmospheric studies"[2], "Decreation"[4] and "I don't believe in outer space"[3] at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, "Nowhere and Everywhere at the Same Time" at the Tate Modern in London.[7] In 2006 her performance of "One Flat Thing, reproduced" was aired on the French-German television network ARTE.[8]

Science[edit]

Because of her experience with "One Flat Thing, reproduced" she started working on Ohio State University's online education project "Synchronous Objects for One Flat Thing, reproduced" in 2009.[12][13]. Successively she became a researcher at Motion Bank's "Dance engaging science" program.[14]

Motion Together[edit]

Motion Together is a research program at the Bielefeld University. Based on Waterhouse's publication "Doing Duo – a case study of entrainment in William Forsythe’s choreography “Duo"” (2014)[15] Motion Together develops an understanding of entrainment using eye-tracking, motion capture to investigate how spectators watch and perceive contemporary dance choreography, in particular, William Forsythe's choreography "Duo". In return Waterhouse looking at "Duo" through entrainment from the performer, side gives an example of partnering: two dancers engaging in a danced conversation without external cues or pulse, which gives insight to nonverbal communication and social interaction among the performers.[16] Since 2015 Waterhouse is director of Motion Together[17]

HOOD[edit]

Together with former Forsythe Company members, she founded the artist collective HOOD at the center for choreography PACT-Zollverein Essen.[18]
