Eloy Omar Aguilar was a journalist and the Associated Press Bureau Chief for Mexico, Central America and Panama from 1979 to 2006.[1]
Early Life and Career[edit]
Aguilar was born on Jan. 5, 1937, on the US-Mexico border at the Rio Grande river. He served in the US Army before pursing a career in journalism.
Aguilar began his journalism career at Brownsville Herald in South Texas and various papers before working for the Associated Press for 40 years. He served as the Bureau Chief for Mexico, Central America and Panama from 1979 to 2006.
Aguilar covered Latin American affairs and in 1999 notably re-opened the AP’s Havana bureau, which had been closed for 3 decades prior.[2]
Awards[edit]
In 2000, Aguilar received Columbia University’s Maria Moors Cabot Prize.[3]
