In 2021, multiple U.S. television news reports covered the abduction of North Carolina teenager Savannah Childress and reported that investigators said initial contact occurred via Emerald Chat.[8][9][10]
Age requirement and verification
According to its terms of service, Emerald Chat is restricted to users aged 18 and over.[11] Independent safety guidance from Australia’s eSafety Commissioner states that Emerald Chat “does not verify the age of users.”[1] U.S. and UK safety sources likewise describe the site’s age gate as a self-declaration checkbox rather than hard verification.[12][13]
