Emily M. Sachar (born April 12, 1958) is an American journalist, author, publisher, and former editorial leader at Newsday, Scholastic, and Time Inc. She is the founder and editor of The Daily Catch. Sachar is a two-time winner of the Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting from the Education Writers of America. She also won the Peter Kihss Award for Outstanding Reporting on New York City Government.[1]
Early life and education[edit]
Emily Sachar was born in St. Louis, MO, to Nancy (Adler) Sachar.[2] Her father, Byron D. Sachar, was a nephew of Abram L. Sachar.[3]
Sachar graduated from Stanford University in 1980 with a B.A. in economics[1][4]. In 2017, she completed her a master's in art history from the City University of New York-Hunter College.[1][4][5]
Career[edit]
Sachar worked as a reporter and columnist for Newsday/New York Newsday.[1]
In 1987 and 1989, Sachar received the Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting.[6] In 1990, Sachar received national recognition for her nine-part series, “My Year as a Teacher”.[7] In 1991, she published a memoir, Shut Up and Let the Lady Teach: A Teacher's Year in a Public School.[8][9][10]
Sachar also worked as editorial director for classroom magazines at Scholastic Inc.,[11] as executive editor and website director for Meredith Corporation, and as site director for the Reader’s Digest Association.[12]
Sachar is a member of the board of trustees of The Olana Partnership.[1][13]

Sachar is the author of a memoir, Shut Up and Let the Lady Teach, published by the Poseidon Press imprint of Simon and Schuster in 1991,[1][8][9][10] and “Schools for a Global Age,” published by Asia Society in 2005”.[4]
