Emit was a band formed in Somerset, England in 1998 by Michael Morthwork, who was also the main member of the group throughout its existence. Emit explored the genres of black metal, dark ambient, electronic music, rock, and experimental primarily, but some other rather niche genres and sub-genres have been recorded. Emit gained notoriety in the underground black metal scene due to the aggressiveness of their music. In 2008, Emit's name was changed to Hammemit, marking a new era of the band's music. Hammemit shifted the focus of the music to historical themes, paganism, and nature. Emit was resurrected in 2012, but still focused more on Hammemit's approach to music rather than Emit's original works.

History[edit]

The band was formed in 1998 from the remnants of a failed band called Ante Cryst[1] by Unknown I, who later went by the alias 'Michael Morthwork' in Hammemit releases, which is believed to be his real name. Emit first released a cassette in 1998, the same year the band formed, named Torture Session[2]. Emit continued to release music typically under self-release or labels owned by Michael Morthwork, such as Moors Murders Productions. Up to the band's shift to Hammemit in 2008, Emit never had any live shows in its original run but had a string of live performances in its 2012 revival. One live show from the 4th of August 2012 was recorded and publicly released on an untitled cassette.[3] In a 2013 interview[4] with Morthwork, under the alias of "MM", he replied to a question that inquired about a tour saying: "A tour is unlikely to say the least. But some more live examples should be made where possible." Michael Morthwork has also been connected to the Order of Nine Angles (abbreviated to O9A or ONA), an organization known for satanism, the Left-hand path, and National Socialism[5] that originated in Shropshire, England in the 1960s[6]. Morthwork has been connected to the O9A due to O9A artwork on Emit's The Dark Gods cassette,[7] likely due to "The Dark Gods" being referred to often in O9A tradition and teachings.[8] Emit's final release was Spectre Music of an Antiquary[9], released in 2014 on CD on Crucial Blast records, after previously being held on Cassette on Glorious North Productions in 2012 as a demo.[10] Besides this release, a second interview with deathmetal.org in 2013 was the final activity from Emit directly.

Hammemit[edit]

Hammemit began in 2008 and got full focus after the release of Emit's compilation CD The Dark Bleeding Gods in 2009. Hammemit's first release was the album Spires Over The Burial Womb, which earned Morthwork his first interview with deathmetal.org in 2008 under his original alias of Unknown I. In the interview he states about the album: "With the Hammemit album, there are no percussion elements, no distorted guitar and mostly clean vocals. In previous releases there’s been a fair amount of variation with clean and distorted guitar, but ironically, I wanted to free myself from the conventions of what I used to do by limiting myself to a bare minimum as far as possible... I believe I’m getting closer to an ideal stylistic approach, which has taken some time to reach." Hammemit continued to release music until 2013, and in that time Hammemit had no live shows in its existence. Hammemit's final release was Morthwork in 2013, recorded in 2011 and 2012 in Wiltshire, England.[11] However, there was a reissue of ...From The Old Hills Desolate in 2017 by Michael Morthwork's label MMP Temple, which has since been mothballed.[12]

Order of Nine Angles and The Black Order[edit]

Emit has been connected to the Order of Nine Angles and the Black Order of Pan Europa in the past for several reasons. Despite this, Emit is not considered to be NSBM Michael Morthwork's membership of the Black Order and the Order of Nine Angles has been made more apparent since the creation of MMP Temple. One such piece of evidence of membership is a Facebook post on MMP Temple's now-deleted page, reading "Supporting our comrades from TBO England"[13] (TBO meaning the Black Order). Another post has also been brought up that included a Swastika, with some claiming it proves MMP Temple supports Fascism and National Socialism. Michael Morthwork also worked with Richard Moult[14], who is a big figure in the Order of Nine Angles, and goes by the alias "Christos Beest". Moult has done illustrations for the Order of Nine Angles' literature. The illustrations were paintings meant for tarot readings, which can also be done digitally via an O9A affiliated website.[15] Moult has denied being a Neo-Nazi, which he was accused of being due to his ties with the O9A, however, Morthwork doesn't seem to care about the title, saying: "call us neo-Nazis if you will, but do not make assumptions otherwise about our motives or alignments… All hail darkness and evil!"[16]

MMP Temple[edit]

MMP Temple was created in 2000 by Michael Morthwork under a different name, and focused on O9A-centered material.[17] The only Emit-related work released under MMP Temple was a reissue of a Hammemit mentioned above, called "...From The Old Hills Desolate", the rest of the music being either loosely or directly related to the O9A.
