Empathy Test is a London-based electronic pop band, formed by Isaac Howlett and Adam Relf in 2013. [1][2]

History[edit]

Empathy Test first gained notoriety in 2014, when their track Losing Touch, taken from a self-released EP of the same name, was used in a viral video produced for Liverpool Football Club by UK artist and animator Richard Swarbrick. [3] In the same year, Swarbrick used another of the band’s tracks, Kirrilee in another viral video called Cats of YouTube. [4] A third track, Last Night on Earth, was also used by Swarbrick in a series of animations commissioned by ESPN, which documented the year’s NBA finals. [5][6]

In the United States, Kirrilee also became the official soundtrack of an art fair inspired by actor Bill Murray called The Murray Affair which took place in San Francisco on August 8, 2014. [7] The following month, on September 22nd, an instrumental version of Empathy Test’s Here is the Place was used as the soundtrack for a video titled The Next Generation Asks World Leaders at UN: Why Not Act on Climate Change?. The short film was produced by The Climate Reality Project initiative promoted by former United States Vice President Al Gore and was screened at the United Nations (UN). [8]

In December of 2014, Empathy Test’s second EP Throwing Stones was released via independent Brooklyn label Stars & Letters Records.[9] The lead single of the same name was Record of the Week on BBC Introducing in Kent. The band were interviewed for the show which was broadcast on November 1st, 2014. [10]

In March of 2015, Empathy Test’s Here is the Place featured in episode #403 of the popular Catfish: The TV Show on MTV .[11].

In 2017, the band decided to launch a crowdfunding campaign via PledgeMusic to self-release the albums Losing Touch (Remastered) and Safe From Harm. The initiative was highly successful and finished 661% funded. [12] [13]

In May of 2018, the track Losing Touch brought further international attention for Empathy Test, this time in Latin America and Spain, when it appeared in two episodes of the Spanish Netflix show Luis Miguel: The Series, a biopic of the life of the titular Mexican superstar of the 1980s. [14]

In March of 2020, a video for the as yet unreleased single Monsters was nominated for a Berlin Music Video award [15] .
