Empower Work is a nonprofit organization founded in 2017 by Jaime-Alexis Flower that provides a free text or web chat service in the United States, and it is focused on providing support to problematic workplace situations.
History[edit]
Empower Work started as a pilot program in 2017 and was officially launched in 2018,[1][2] it is headquartered in San Francisco. The organization's founder, Jaime-Alexis Flower believes that most people have faced a problematic situation at work and that underrepresented groups and those with less social capital gets impacted more by these situations.[3][4] She decided to start Empower Work to attempt to provide support to workers that may be facing these issues.[4][5] Empower Work's pilot group overwhelmingly choose texting over calling to reach the hotline, Jaime-Alexis Flower assumes that it is because there would be no risk of being overhead, thereby providing more privacy.[2] Empower Work claims to have sent 20,000 messages during 400 conversations in the first year of its official launch.[2] Empower Work was selected to be part of Fast Forward’s Tech Nonprofit Accelerator in July 2018,[6] and the Visible Connect Accelerator Program in September 2019.[7]
