An engagement group, or "Instagram pod", is a group of people who agree to like and comment on one another's posts on social media in order to increase the posts' visibility and engagement rate (likes and comments).[1] Engagement groups became increasingly popular in the Instagram community in late March 2018 when Instagram changed its algorithm.[2] The pods are often managed through Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook, or Discord.

Purpose[edit]

Engagement groups are formed to help Instagrammers gain more exposure on their posts. By liking and commenting on one another's posts within the group, members can give exposure to each other on their own profiles as well by potentially reaching new audiences.

The purpose is also to help each Instagrammers' post reach the explore page, where users can discover new profiles. The more engagement a post has, the more likely it is that the post will be shown on people's explore page which increases visibility.[3] The ultimate goal is to increase the reach and get more followers.[4]

Some of the engagement groups have hundreds of thousands of users in their Telegram chat groups.

According to Instagram the engagement groups and it's practices are violating their policies.[5]

Types of Engagement Groups[edit]

There are many different types of engagement groups. Some popular groups include:

General Groups[edit]

In a general group, users can post about anything. These groups are usually not centered around a certain community or topic and have a very broad audience.

Viral Groups[edit]

A viral group is centered around a particular topic or hashtag with strict rules on what a user can post and who can post.

Niche Groups[edit]

Niche groups are centered around a particular topic. For example, there are only specific groups for users in the fitness niche or in the fashion niche. Only those users are allowed to be part of the group.

Powerlikes Groups[edit]

These groups mostly consist of users with a large number of followers[disambiguation needed]. They like each other's posts to rank for specific hashtags.
