Production[edit]

The original inspiration for the film was derived from the experience Betts' mom had as a survivor of a hit-and-run accident in her youth.[2] Dashion designer Prabal Gurung, a longtime friend of Betts', created a white dress for Lucas' character, who wears it in the opening sequence while walking in a field of lush grass.[2] The film was shot on an 800-acre plot in the Berkshires of New England and partially in the West Fourth Street–Washington Square station in New York.[1] It mainly takes place in the Berkshires plot, which Gurung described as having a "magical, beautiful feel", interspersed with scenes of the two main characters as elderly people and those of them as children.[3] The characters played by Lucas and Ackland represent the inner voices of their older counterparts and are shown barefoot throughout the film. The Berkshires are depicted as the imaginary place where the characters converse and spend time with each other while trying to piece if and how they know each other.[2]

On March 31, 2014, the film premiered at the Museum of Modern Art. Prabal Gurung and singer Sophie Auster hosted the screening.[1]

Reception[edit]

Audiences have responded favorably to the film. Former First Lady of the United States Barbara Bush, who attended the screening, said of the film, "It was really beautiful. And very sweet."
