Eric (Eliezer) Kornhauser

Eliezer Kornhauser (Eric Kornhauser) is a businessman based in Melbourne, Australia. He is also noted for his activities within the Jewish community.

Family and business interests[edit]

Kornhauser is the son of Eddie Kornhauser, a property developer, with many interests all over Australia, but especially in Queensland.[1] He worked as a lawyer and merchant banker, before moving into property development himself.[2] He is the executive director of the family's fortune.[3]

The family wealth in 2014 was estimated at $AUS 439 million.[4]

Jewish communal activity[edit]

Kornhauser provides significant funding for many communal organisations.[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15][16]

One of the institutes that was funded by Kornhauser is Mekros educational institutes, which is run by Rabbi Ahron (Arel) Serebranski.[17][18] It was through this institute that Kornhauser helped to set up the Chabad House of Canberra, as a rival to the existing Jewish community centre under the stewardship of Dan Avital.[19] As part of the community Kornhauser established a mikveh[20][21] and a Jewish shop.[22] He was also involved in the setting up of a pre-school facility.[23]The leadership of the community was soon taken over by Shmueli Feldman.

Cheder Levi Yitzchok[edit]

Kornhauser set up a boys school, Cheder Levi Yitzchok, and installed himself as the principal.[24][25] The school was a rival in the Chabad community to the more established Yeshiva College, but it was soon accepted by the leaders of the established organisations.[26]

The school was initially set up in their East St Kilda mansion, which also housed the Merkos Women program.[27] As the noise and disruption to neighbours began becoming more intense, Kornhauser attempted to gain permits for the site, although this was rejected by the council.[28] Eventually after a 2 year legal battle Kornhauser won the right to run the school in the residential street, despite strong opposition from the local residents.[29] Allegations were made that Kornhauser and his wife had issued threats during the legal proceedings.[30]

Later the school was moved to a different location after another mansion was purchased by Kornhauser.[31] The school's focus is Jewish studies, rather than secular studies.[32][33]
