Eric Abtan (born 1972) is a musician and world traveller. He is one of the few to have travelled to every country in the world and speaks close to 15 languages.
Biography[edit]
Born in Spanish Africa in 1972 to Jewish Moroccan parents[1], his family immigrated to Canada when he was young. Growing up, he spent an extended period of time in Israel. As an adult he spent several years in Germany, Ukraine, China, Hong Kong and Hungary.[2]
Musical Career[edit]
Considered by many as a "musician's musician," Abtan has worked, performed or recorded with such artists as Phil Collins, Ed Sheeran, Mick Jagger, Oasis, Christina Aguilera, Gilby Clarke (Guns N' Roses), Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep), Billy Gould (Faith No More), Jane's Addiction, Darius Rucker (Hootie & The Blowfish), Dieter Bohlen (Modern Talking), Manfred Mann, Eric Burdon, Joni Mitchell, Saxon.[3] He has accompanied artists on tours of every size, from showcases to arenas. [4]
In between tours, Abtan played solo shows in music clubs. After several years of touring, Abtan wanted to spend less time on the road. He changed his focus to studio work, mainly production and composition for other artists, while continuing to play his solo shows locally. Based for several years in Hamburg, Germany, he came to be considered one of the all-stars of the Reeperbahn.[5]
Today, Abtan has mostly retired. He spends his time travelling, living in hotels and AirBnBs[2] , still playing occasional shows for his own enjoyment. He is often asked to play one-off shows to accompany artists for special occasions. [4]
In January 2020, the German band KAIZER announced that they had invited Abtan to appear on their album "Leidwerk" as a special guest guitarist on their upcoming album. [6] The album, Leidwerk, reached number 4 in the German charts (DAC). [7]
