Ernst Krendlinger

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Ernst Krendlinger (* October 8, 1954 in Trostberg) is a distinguished German chemist specialized in waxes and their applications. He served as the Head of Research and Development (R&D) for the production and development of the oil and chemical binder PURE.[1] in 2010.

Life and Career

Ernst Krendlinger grew up in the district of Trostberg. He has lived in Friedberg with his wife and two daughters since 1998.

School career

At the age of 15, he began an apprenticeship as a chemical laboratory assistant. He obtained his high school diploma (Abitur) at Kettelerkolleg in Mainz and subsequently pursued his studies at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz. In 1990, he earned his doctorate at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research.

Career

Following his studies, Krendlinger primarily worked as a product and process developer for companies such as Vereinigte Aluminium Werke (VAW), Lubrizol, Clariant, and Deurex. His work has centered on various types of waxes, including natural waxes, synthetic waxes, wax mixtures as well as wax dispersions and emulsions. His activities have led to numerous practical applications of waxes in many industries.

Notable achievements include his work on sugarcane waxes, which play a crucial role in replacing fossil or petroleum-based waxes. Krendlinger also contributed to the construction of a production facility capable of producing 2000 thousand tons of sugarcane wax annually in India, in collaboration with the Somaiya Group and Godavari Biorefineries Ltd[2]

In addition to his extensive publications, Krendlinger holds over 20 patents[3], primarily focused on technical applications of waxes. Some of these patents address topics such as blood pressure reduction and cholesterol reduction using Montan waxes and surface-modified aluminum oxide nanoparticles, as well as substances with a positive impact on Alzheimer's disease and/or Alzheimer's prevention.

Between 2004 and 2007, Ernst Krendlinger, in collaboration with M. Neumaier, investigated the cholesterol-lowering effects of policosanol derived from sugarcane wax, which has a very similar chemical structure to Montan waxes. These patents were drafted by Mr. Krendlinger on behalf of Clariant, with the goal of bringing Montan wax to market as a cholesterol-lowering agent. It was discovered that both policosanol from sugarcane wax and Montan wax had similar effectiveness in lowering cholesterol levels.

In 2010, while working at DEUREX, a wax with a cotton-like consistency was accidentally created. Mr. Krendlinger tested the cotton and discovered its remarkable hydrophobic and lipophilic properties, meaning it absorbs oil and repels water. Due to its unique properties, further research was conducted. Patents authored by him on the oil and chemical binder DEUREX PURE[1] were filed through Deurex AG. In 2017, he received the European Inventor Award[4] from the European Patent Office on behalf of the company for this innovation, which took place in Venice.

In 2016, Krendlinger was interviewed about the "magic cotton" PURE[1] by ProSieben[5], and in 2017, he presented it at TedxMunich[6] and was interviewed by BR24 for the Inventor's Award[4]. PURE is used for various purposes, including cleaning up oil spills in the Niger Delta in Africa[7] and by fire departments and technical relief organizations throughout Europe. It is also used in the construction of wind turbines to capture turbine oil and contain oil spills while allowing water to flow freely. PURE is distributed not only by Deurex but also by UPS GmbH in Aschau under the name "Zauberwatte" (magic cotton) and by the company Herbach[8] in Kreuzwertheim.

Since 2020, he has been working as an independent consultant for waxes and pigments, conducting various presentations and training sessions on wax and sharing his knowledge. He established Dr. K Wachs INTELLIGENCE[9] for this purpose.

He also co-founded EPW GmbH with Patric Bauer to expand their joint wax business. Additionally, he collaborates with Luxchem, Patric Bauer e.K., in the field of pigment colors, fat-soluble dyes, and waxes.

Due to his extensive work related to waxes, he authored the wax section of Ulmann's Encyclopedia[10] in 2015 and the wax section of the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology[11] in 2023 for Wiley Publishers. In 2022, he co-authored the book "Natural and Synthetic Waxes"[12] with Uwe Wolfmeier, which comprehensively explores all facets of waxes for technical applications, spanning over 700 pages.
