Erudite AI
Erudite AI is a Canadian artificial intelligence (AI) and education technology company based in Montreal, Quebec. Erudite AI uses an artificial intelligence powered web-based platform that works partly as a knowledge management system. The platform, named ERI (Educational Real-time Interface), aims to identify students' support needs and match them to a peer-tutor with expertise in that math subject through a peer-to-peer tutoring application.[1]

History[edit]
In the years leading up to founding Erudite AI in 2013, its CEO Patrick Poirier went on to earn degrees in Commerce, Psychiatry, Molecular Biology, Computational and Mathematical Finance, in addition to a diploma in Computer Science and nanodegree from the educational organization Udacity. In an interview with Radio-Canada, Poirier explained that it was studying under a tutor which enabled his academic improvement.[2]
Erudite AI began with building educational games before moving on to the development of its intelligent tutoring system ERI.[3]
The company conducted its first live experiments on May 29, 2017. The subjects of this ongoing pilot program were students enrolled in high school math courses at Collège Beaubois in Pierrefonds, Quebec. The school’s principal and teaching faculty acted as facilitators while students connected according to tutoring skills and needs.[4]
On May 30, 2017, the Erudite AI team was officially entered into the 2017 IBM Watson AI XPRIZE, a global four-year competition held by the non-profit organization XPRIZE.[3] The competition challenges a global array of teams “to develop and demonstrate how humans can collaborate with powerful AI technologies to tackle the world’s grand challenges.”[5]
On December 5, 2017, Erudite AI was among the 59 teams belonging to 14 countries selected to move forward in the XPRIZE competition. Erudite AI was listed as one of the 10 top front-runners who stood out to an independent judging panel for developing “innovative, important AI technologies.”[6]
Erudite AI was named a finalist for Best Innovation in Deep Learning by The Alconics, the world’s only independently-judged awards celebrating Artificial Intelligence for Business in 2017.[7]
Technology[edit]
The ERI platform is a high-scalability platform to facilitate AI augmented peer-to-peer tutoring sessions between students across schools, classes, and geographical regions. It combines a distributed architecture with AI retrieval and generation technology to augment the performance of students in the tutoring role.
ERI users post homework problems they are struggling with, and ERI analyzes the content of the problem using machine learning to find peer students to assist with the problem. After being paired, an AI augments the performance of the tutor by providing them scaffolded responses, and is intended to act as a coach and mentor to the students during the chat session.[8]
