Search Esquie on Amazon.Esquie was designed with the intent to create a character with more of a lovable personality to counter-balance the bleak moments of the game. The character has received positive reviews from critics and players for his unique design, and his affectionate phrases and actions.

Appearances

Expedition 33 first encounters Esquie in his titular cave, and during their initial encounter, Esquie calls Sciel in particular his “terrible swimmer friend.” The expeditioners remain confused at this dialogue, however it’s later revealed that Esquie saved Sciel from her attempted suicide by drowning after the death of her husband Pierre.[1] It’s discovered in the journal for Expedition 66 that they were not the first Expedition to meet with Esquie.

He requests that they find the stones that energize him and allow him to perform certain abilities, and is willing to join them as their mount. Eventually, Verso, an old friend of Esquie’s would join the Expedition, and he would gradually gain more and more abilities as the game goes on.

It would later be revealed that Esquie, along with many other creatures in the continent, including the gestrals, the grandis, and Monoco, were created by the real Verso Dessendre in his Canvas. He was modeled after a plush Verso had in his room.

Conception and Design

Esquie was designed with the intent to create a round, ‘friend-shaped’ companion that was also intended to be the Expedition’s ‘airship,’ that players are fond of.[2]

It’s also been noted that Esquie’s design is similar to that of a wineskin.[3]

Reception

Esquie has received positive reviews from critics and players alike. Polygon’s Austin Manchester praised Esquie for being a light-hearted character that was easy to love in spite of the game’s moody tone.[4]

Andrew Scariati of TheGamer praised Esquie for being both comic relief, and occasionally, emotionally wholesome with his interaction with characters, stating “As with much of the game, Esquie’s matter-of-fact interjections hit me even harder when I realized how casually he mentions the most heartbreaking topics.” He also praises Esquie’s interactions with both Verso and Sciel.[5]
