Esther John (born 1952[1]) served as a presidential elector from Washington for the 2016 presidential election. She did not vote as pledged, and as such is regarded as a faithless elector.
Biography[edit]
When the Electoral College voted on December 19, 2016, John became one of four electors from the state of Washington not to vote for Clinton. Instead, she voted for former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and Susan Collins, a U.S. Senator from Maine; both Powell and Collins are Republicans.[2][3] Regarding her vote, John stated she voted "in the hopes that Democrats and Republicans could reconcile" and, "Colin Powell is beloved by so many people and respected by so many people."[4]
Two other faithless electors in the state, Bret Chiafalo and Levi Guerra, also voted for Powell, but with different Vice Presidential candidates, while the last faithless elector, Robert Satiacum Jr., voted for an all-Native American ticket with Faith Spotted Eagle and Winona LaDuke (Satiacum is likewise a native American).
