Description

Ultra-smart, with a tenacious drive to help Shipton Abbott (Devon), the town she grew up in, her encyclopaedic knowledge of the local community and tireless professionalism complement Humphrey's more unconventional working methods.[2]
She's close to her daughter, Zoe (Melina Sinadinou), and makes sure she always does right by her, trying to balance work and making sure she can still have time for her family.
She also has a close relationship with Kelby Hartford (Dylan Llewellyn), as she takes him under her wing. Esther guides him along - he's almost like a little brother to her.
Given her personality, it's hardly surprising that she finds working with Humphrey difficult, due to the fact there are a lot of differences there.[3]
Background
Esther grew up Shipton Abbott and knows all about the local community, making her an important part of the police force.
After falling pregnant at 17, Esther secretly felt like a failure, but she took a chance and applied for a job at a Police Constable which ultimately changed her life. Esther rose through the ranks quickly, now a Detective Sergeant and is a well-respected and professional member of the team.
"Esther found the police force later in life — it took her a few jobs to get to this point, but she loves it," says Zahra Ahmadi. "It's her passion, she's really good at what she does, and she's finally found her place now."
In Series 2, Martha (Sally Bretton), and Esther (Ahmadi) are shown to have a blossoming friendship after Martha employeed Zoe (Sinadinou) at her restaurant, the Ten Mile Kitchen.
After several drinks at the Kitty Jay, Martha and Esther speak casually about their lives. Martha asks her how her love life is now, and Esther says it's non-existent. Martha tells Esther that Zoe is amazing and a total credit to her.
Martha (Bretton) asks Esther (Ahmadi) about Zoe's father, as she's heard from Humphrey (Kris Marshall) that they weren't together long, and Esther tells her the story: when she found out she was pregnant, she didn't think it would be fair not to tell the father, so she tracked him down. He was lovely and said he'd support her however she wanted, and that she'd be a great mum. They met up a few times to discuss the logistics and became good mates, then a bit more than mates. But one day, he was riding his motorbike when he got clipped by a transit van and went over the central reservation, and he didn't survive.
Appearance
In the Series 1, Episode 1 script, she's described as a '34 year old, with hair bunched tightly back, not a strand out of place and with virtually no make up. On sight you instinctively know that she is smart, efficient, thorough and calm in a crisis.'
She is mostly seen wearing a button down shirt (often white) with a dark blazer, skinny jeans and black shoes.
Actress thoughts
"The first time Esther meets Humphrey — because of the circumstances — she’s in complete disbelief and cannot comprehend that he is her new boss. She’s questioning if this guy is really from the Met! He defies all stereotypes that you would associate with a high-achieving police officer.
"He appears like a bit of a bumbling idiot, but, as the series progresses, her opinion changes of him and she realises that he is a brilliant detective. He thinks in ways that Esther doesn't and that's why their relationship really works. They are the yin to each other’s yang." - Zahra Ahmadi
