Ethercalc is an online spreadsheet software.[2][3] It is an alternative to Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel. It's hosted with Node.js and written in LiveScript.[4] Its interface is simplistic and focuses on usability instead of having the full power of a full desktop app.[3] It works in real-time.
Ethercalc is presented as the successor of SocialCalc, developed by Socialtext. The latter itself comes from WikiCalc.[5]
SocialCalc was originally designed to open, edit and save the spreadsheet online, not to show everyone's contributions in real time. A version of SocialCalc released in 2009 did allow real-time collaboration, however, but the performance was poor. The goal of EtherCalc was therefore to overcome this performance problem and create a spreadsheet really designed for real-time collaboration.
It's made by Audrey Tang. The work was built on Dan Bricklin's work on WikiCalc and their work together on SocialCalc.[6][7][8]
Ethercalc is easily installable with the ethercalc package in a docker.[9]
