Ethereum Push Notifications Service (EPNS) is a decentralized communication protocol for Web3 that allows any DApps, smart contracts, backends or protocols to send communication directly to user wallet addresses.[1][2][3]

History[edit]

Foundation[edit]

Mr. Harsh Rajat[4] started EPNS in January 2020 in Mumbai to build a communication layer for the Web3 infrastructure.[5] The proof-of-concept (PoC) for EPNS was presented at the ETH Global’s Hack Money hackathon conducted in 2020. [5] The project later got accepted into the first cohort of Gitcoin Kernel. [6][7]

Development and IDO[edit]

In the year 2021, protocol contracts developed, and front end improvements and developer tools were made. Post that, the project announced token generation event for the protocol named $PUSH and listed it on cryptocurrency exchanges like Huobi, KuCoin, WazirX Gate.io, among others. [8] By mid-2021, EPNS launched Browser Extension and SDK Beta v1.0, partnering with some Defi protocols and communities in the ecosystem, these include Uniswap, AAVE, Alpha Homora, TrueFi, Gitcoin, Polygon, Superfluid, and Biconomy.[9] The protocol also launched its governance program in the following months, allowing for the decentralization of the protocol among the token holders. [10]

Alpha Launch[edit]

In October 2021, ChainSafe audited the smart contracts of EPNS, approaching the final stages of the development.[11] to then head to the Alpha Launch of EPNS PUSH Nodes, to  enable communication across the Ethereum ecosystem and layer-2 solutions. By the end of 2021, EPNS moved towards their mainnet launch on Ethereum ecosystem and layer-2 solutions. [12]

Mainnet Launch[edit]

In January 2022, the project launched EPNS mainnet on the Ethereum network, making push notifications a part of the Web3 infrastructure. [12][13] Post that, the multiple channel releases happened on the platform, allowing users to subscribe and receive notifications. [1] EPNS announced its plans for Phase 2 of the protocol which aimed to bring multichain functionality and participation incentives in the following months. [12]

Technical Details[edit]

Product[edit]

The protocol allows a decentralized wallet service to send notifications to users on their devices, and tell them when the value of their non-fungible token (NFT) or cryptocurrency has changed, etc. EPNS uses channels to communicate with users by sending them alerts. The EPNS communication layer is built as it’s own network using nodes for validation, which they claim allows gasless and multichain communication.[2] Notifications on EPNS are treated and stored as JSON payloads to provide flexibility of content type like images, live videos and delivery. [14] EPNS rewards both senders and receivers for their participation in the network. [15]

Funding[edit]

The EPNS project is funded by by more than 35 venture capitalists and Web 3.0 Angel investors, which includes Balaji Srinivasan, Binance Labs, Nischal Shetty, Sandeep Nailwal (Co-founder, Polygon) and DeFi Dad.[16] In the latter half of 2020, EPNS raised a total of $1.41 million in two seed rounds from investors Balaji Srinivasan (Former CTO of Coinbase), Kenneth Ng (Ethereum Foundation), Scott Moore (Co-founder, Gitcoin), and Mariano Conti (former MakerDAO Head of Smart Contracts). [17][10]

In April 2022, the project raised $10 million in funding valued at $131 million in its Series A round, led by Tiger Global, Alpha Wave Capital and others.[18]
