The Ex Box Boys are an American rock band. Phil Fischer, Dave Sprout, Bryan Barrows, and Joseph Childres founded the band in 2007. In 2009 the band finished recording their first studio album, Chronicles of the Orb.
The band was previously known as The Xbox Boys, until the band ran into legal troubles with Microsoft. The legal troubles caused the band to stop recording music in 2011.
History[edit]
The band was originally founded in 2007, with each band member performing under an alias. The four members were Phil Fischer, Dave Sproul, Bryan Barrows, and Joseph Childres. They consisted of the lead vocalist and guitarist P-Box, the drummer Beat-Box, lead guitarist B-Box and Bassist D-Box.
A year after they started recording music, the band had reached 850,000 downloads online.[1]
The band quickly became an Internet hit, with many questioning how Microsoft’s PR department would react to the band using the Xbox brand name in a creative way soon after they were founded. The bands popularity also began to move into the gaming community where they were interviewed by a number of gaming websites.[2][3]
In 2009, the band finished recording their first album Chronicles of Orb.[4]
In 2010, the band appeared on King 5 News discussing the name and their recent performances.[5] This was after they’d finished recording their debut album. At this point, the band had reached over 16 million plays on their MySpace page.[6]
In 2011, the company ran into copyright issues with Microsoft over the name ‘The Xbox Boys’. The band then changed their name to ‘The Exbox Boys’ and continued to record music. However these copyright issues eventually caused the band to stop recording later that year.
Performances & composition[edit]
The bands songs are based on video games and have a cult following in the gaming community because of this. The band performed across the globe on a Global Tour after the success of the songs they released online.[7][8]
Microsoft conflict[edit]
In 2011 the band were forced to stop recording under the name of The Xbox Boys, however the band’s music was allowed to remain available under the band title Ex Box Boys. These copyright issues resulted in the band breaking up in 2011.
