Dr. Ezhilan Naganathan is medical practioner and Social Activist from Chennai, Tamil Nadu.[1][2] He is representing the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Party and contesting for the first time in TamilNadu State Assembly Elections 2021 from Thousand Lights constituency, Chennai. He hails from a family of freedom fighters. His grandfather and grand mother spent close to 27 years in jail, fighting the British oppression during the Indian Independence struggle.
Dr. Ezhilan born to parents with strong Dravidian ideologies, Professor Dr. M. Naganathan and Professor Dr. Santhi Naganathan. Professor M. Naganathan was a close associate of Ex-Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Dr. Kalaignar M Karunanidhi for over 40 years and efficiently served as the Vice-Chairman of Tamil Nadu State Planning Commission from 2006-2011.[3] Dr. Ezhilan was ntrusted with the responsibility of complete medical care of Kalaignar for nearly a decade.
Education[edit]
Ezhilan completed his schooling from the prestigious Don Bosco Matriculation School, Egmore. He was a meritorious student and also talented young dancer. Ezhilan completed his under-graduation and post-graduation in Medicine from the renouned Madras Medical College (MMC).
During his post-graduation in MMC, he was decorated with the B Bruan Medical Award and Edward Norraday Award for academic excellence in the field of medicine. He is a Gold Medalist in his Post-Graduation in Medicine in the year 2007. Dr. Ezhilan was the force behind the protests that fought for the much needed increase in the minimum pay of post-graduate students. Dr. Ezhilan during his post-graduation tenure, was instrumental in establishing an exclusive poison control centre in MMC, that contributes to save thousands of lives of farmers from snake bite poisoning, scorpion poisoning, rat poisoning and pesticide poisoning across Tamilnadu state.
Career[edit]
Dr. Ezhilan runs his private clinic in Teynampet, Chennai for more than 15 years primarily to provide Free Medical Assistance for the poor and needy in his locality. served at CSI Kalyani Mission Hospital, Chenna for 10 years. He was also consulting at Aswenee Hospital at Poes Garden, Chennai. He is also consultant doctor at Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet Chennai.
He is fondly remembered by his patients for his empathy and his habit of leaving no stone unturned to save a life.
He has mentored 40 post-graduate students who are in practising professionals across India.
In 2019, Dr. Ezhilan was among the first few doctors who came forward to fight the Corona Outbreak. He is still in frontline to fight the Corona Pandemic. He has treated and saved more than 2000 people during this Pandemic.
Dr. Ezhilan is also well known for his efficient service in the past, combating Chikungunya and Dengue epidemic.
Social Activist[edit]
He is the founder of an NGO (MAX Medical Foundation)[4] that is committed to educating the youth of TamilNadu in imparting the value of Scientific temper and eradicating superstitions. His organization has been always in the forefront of aiding the poor and vulnerable, during unprecedented times of natural calamities and disasters by conducting state wide health camps and first aid centres. He is a Rotarian and has also won two district awards as the Director of Public Health for his work among AIDS affected children and transgender communities. He is also a founder of Illaignar Iyamkkam (Youth Organization) - a non profitable/Non-governmental organization that works for education and empowerment of the Youth of Tamil Nadu about science, social justice and equality.
Political Journey[edit]
Dr. Ezhilan and family are Periarists. They believe in dravidan idealogies and follow the path of Aringnar Anna and Thandhai Periyar on secularism and social justice.
Ezhilan joined Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party and is contesting for the first time in TamilNadu State Assembly Elections 2021 from Thousand Lights Constituency, Chennai.[5]
Ezhilan stands for and continues to advocate the importance of social justice, scientific temper, secularism and state autonomy across the nooks and corners of Tamil Nadu.
He opposed the exclusionary policies such as NEET,[6] NEP, NRC, CAA through state wide protest, public gatherings, meetings and TV shows. He has strongly opposed all the majoritarian policies of central and state government during 2016-2021. He has been a guest speaker and participated in many debates and interviews in Regional and National televison in India, on topics surrounding social justice, state government’s policies on inclusion and education. It is also needs to be noted that his party DMK was responsible for bringing NEET in Tamil Nadu.[7]

Some of the causes he has taken up include the Sri Lankan Tamil Independence movement, Kudankulam nuclear power plant protests and so on.[citation needed]
