Dr. Faisal Saud Dar (born 18 February, 1973) is an Pakistani surgeon. He is known for his expertise in liver transplantation, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery. He is considered one of the world's best liver transplant surgeons. He made his name in Pakistan by performing the first successful[1] liver transplant in the country.[2]

He serves as Chairman, Liver Transplantation/Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery and Dean (CEO) at Pakistan Kidney & Liver Institute (PKLI) and Research Centre, DHA 6, Lahore, Pakistan.

Early life and education[edit]

Prof. Dr. Faisal Saud Dar was born in the Faisalabad, a city in Punjab Province of Pakistan. His fathers name is Muhammad Afzal.

He was a student in local school based in a small town of Kharian in Gujrat District of Pakistan and received his MBBS from Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore and FCPS (Surgery) from the College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP).

He later went to the United Kingdom , to receive another degree FRCS (Surgery) from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, followed by Fellowship in Liver Transplantation / Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Surgery from Kings College Hospital, London.

He later became the fellow of European Board in Transplant Surgery (FEBTS – Transplant Surgery)

Career[edit]

Prof. Dr Faisal Saud Dar worked in various hospitals in UK before returning to Pakistan, where he spent time training motivated individuals to be a part of team that could possibly lead towards improving the Liver transplant program in the country.

After 16 months of rigorous trainings and team planning Dr Faisal Dar lead a successful liver transplant on 30th April, 2011 at Shifa International Hospital which is considered to be the first successful transplant.

In a career over 2 decades, Prof. Faisal Saud Dar has performed over 1100 liver transplants.[3]

Prof. Faisal Saud Dar currently works in Pakistan at Pakistan Kidney & Liver Institute (PKLI) and Research Centre, Lahore where patients are being offered the same treatment with the help of government funding enabling access to such high-end medical facilities even to needy people from far flung places.

Prof. Faisal Saud Dar is also a hepatobiliary surgeon, performing Whipple's surgery for pancreatic cancer, liver resections for different patients. His research interest is in the field of clinical liver transplantation, translational studies into liver regeneration and liver preservation. He has over 47 publications [4] in the indexed medical journals.

Achievements & Awards[edit]

Faisal Dar’s was awarded with civil award “Sitara-e-Imtiaz” by the honourable president of Pakistan in 2016 [5] towards his contribution in the development of liver transplant service in Pakistan.

He was awarded with “BMJ South Asia Award 2017” [6] 

Zenith Global Healthcare’s International Healthcare Professional and Special Recognition Awards in 2018”[7]
