Fakhar Abbas (Urdu: فخر عباس) is a wildlife biologist from Pakistan. He began his career working with World Animal Protection against bearbaiting and has worked with the organization for almost a decade.
Abbas graduated from University of Arid Agriculture Rawalpindi and received his doctorate from University of the Punjab and completed a postdoctoral position at Wright State University. His doctoral research focused on various aspects of the life cycle and population of Gray Goral.[1]
The first bear rescue centre in Pakistan, named Kund Bear Sanctuary,[2] was established in 2000. Since then, the organization has rescued several bears from bearbaiting events.[3] Another bear rescue centre, Balkasar Bear Sanctuary[4] in Chakwal, Punjab, has also been established, where the rescued bears are now housed.[5]
Abbas is Executive Director of the Bioresource Research Centre,[6] which conducts research in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Bioacoustics, Herpetology, and animal physiology, and includes a herbarium and a library[7] for researchers from all Pakistani universities to conduct and complete their research. In 2010, he also started the Institute of Natural and Management Sciences (INAM), a degree-granting educational institute affiliated with the University of Sargodha.[8]
During his efforts for wildlife conservation, especially bears, in which he is an expert,[9] he visited 1845 schools to engage students in local conservation, and also conveyed his message on conservation and animal rights in Islam to various mosque leaders to appeal to the public through their religious beliefs.[10] His book Animal's Rights in Islam addresses animal rights in Islam and advocates for humane animal treatment.[11] Abbas has published extensively on bioresource management and other wildlife and conservation issues.[12]
