Fall II Rise (abbreviated FIIR, pronounced "Fall to Rise", not to be confused with El Paso, Texas band Fall 2 Rise or with Spanish death metal band Rise to Fall) are a Puerto Rican alternative rock/hard rock band formed in 2009.

History

Formation and early years (2005-2010)

In 2005, vocalist Betty Guerrero and guitarists Luis Carmona and Eduardo Rodríguez, high-school friends, formed a rock band in Spanish after reportedly cutting class one day and writing songs.[1] However, in 2009 they decided to switch to making heavier music in English. This was the birth of Fall II Rise. In 2010, they were joined by José Escudero (bassist) and Alex Magno (drummer) to complete the band's lineup.[2]

When asked about the band's name, Guerrero states that when the band was created, there was no real meaning behind it. In her own words, "the story kind of developed itself as the band grew. [...] You have to fall many times in order to rise and actually accomplish what you really want."[3][4] In a 2011 interview with EvanescencePR.com, however, Eduardo Rodríguez (then guitarist) stated that the name had to do with their first (failed) attempt at a band, and the concept of reinventing themselves to make Fall II Rise a hard rock band in English.[1]

Opening for Evanescence and debut album, Fall II Rise (2011-2012)

The band was chosen by Evanescence to be their opening act at Coliseo José Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico on October 6, 2011.[5][6][7][8] At this time, Fall II Rise viewed this as an opportunity to expand their reach and play, for the first time, to an arena with thousands in the audience.[1] The band describes this opportunity as an unbelievable experience[2] and a dream come true,[1] often referencing this show as a reason why they keep making music. During their set, they played a brief rendition of La Borinqueña, Puerto Rico's national anthem, and a few of their songs from their self-titled album, including single Four.

Their first full-length album, Fall II Rise, was released on January 17, 2012. The CD release was accompanied by a pre-release party on January 12, 2012, during which the band played a few songs from the album, including Four, Blindfolds, and Summers in California. After the release of their debut album, the band received significant support from the local audience and newspapers and their songs were played on major radio stations island-wide and internationally, including Radio Panorama (Peru) and Radio Naba (Latvia).[9] The popularity for the single was such that the music video was played on El Salvador rock show RadicalesTV. [10] They also received airplay in Radio Panorama (Peru) and End of Days was played on Puerto Rican wrestling show WWC on the airings between January 21, 2012 and April 15, 2012.[11][12][13][14]

In July 2012, the band began touring in Wisconsin and the United States in general. This experience would later prompt them to continue touring and eventually move out of the island.

On December 26, 2012, the band announced that they were looking for a new drummer, possibly in connection to their September 2013 announcement of the departure of drummer Alex Magno.

Touring, lineup changes, The Phoenix EP, and move to Wisconsin (2013-2014)

The Stampede, a single from the band's EP The Phoenix was released on January 21, 2013.

On March 15, 2013, the band announced that they signed with Arrowhead Productions.[15]

On September 2, 2013, the band announced that due to personal reasons, bassist José Escudero and guitarist Eduardo Rodríguez would be leaving Fall II Rise.[16] On September 24, 2013, the band also announced that drummer Alex Magno would no longer be with them, due to him needing to care for his mother, who was ill.[17]

In January 2013, after achieving national popularity in Puerto Rico, Fall II Rise moved temporarily to Austin, TX.[4] They then toured the United States and played multiple national venues before moving back to Puerto Rico. However, they relocated to Madison, WI in April 2014, citing the positive response they received in the Midwest as a reason for moving. They have been living there ever since.[3][4]

The Demise of the Empire (2015-present)

On December 12, 2015, the band released their 6-song EP, The Demise of the Empire. It includes their previously-released singles All of This and We Are.

In 2017, the band announced via Facebook the departure of bassist Tyler D. Williams, though they did not give a reason.

In a 2017 interview for Vigorous Mazazine, Betty (who also has a career as a fitness model) hinted at "upcoming music/video releases" for Fall II Rise.[18]

Artistry

Style and influences

The band cites influences in classical music, jazz, heavy metal, progressive rock, alternative rock, and latin music, giving them a unique perspective on hard rock. In an ad on BandMix, the band also lists Breaking Benjamin, Disturbed, Evanescence, Godsmack, Korn, Killswitch Engage, and Three Days Grace as influencing artists.[1][2][19] Their style is regarded as unique and different, with the mix between Betty's voice and the instrumentation being described as "weird, cool" by Geoff Slater from Local Indie Artist Network podcast.[20]

Inspiration

The band often draws from the hardships of daily life to write their songs, as well as talking about social conflicts of today's age.[2]

According to the band, the song Blindfolds was inspired by the famous photograph by Kevin Carter, "The Struggling Girl."

The song Summers in California came about after a summer fling one of the band members had.
