Biography

Jorge Sebastián Pop Chocoj was born 20 October 2005 to a family of Qʼeqchiʼ origin in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala.[3] During his adolescence he showed interest in popular music and urban culture, which led him to record and share home videos on social media.[4]

Disappearance and death

On 20 May 2024, Jorge Sebastián was reported missing, after he left his residence in Cobán, Alta Verapaz, heading for Guatemala City. Family members reported that he was last seen walking along Paseo La Sexta before they lost contact with him.[5] In the following days, family, friends, and followers used social media to spread the word about his disappearance and request support in the search.[6] On 25 May 2024, Public Prosecutor's Office authorities raided an abandoned home in the El Limón neighborhood, in Zone 18 of the capital, where his body was found buried in the yard. The National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF) confirmed that the body belonged to Jorge Sebastián Pop Chocoj and determined the cause of death to be asphyxiation by strangulation which was estimated to have occurred four to six days before the discovery.[7][8] A month later, the Public Prosecutor's Office reported that he had boarded a motorcycle taxi on the afternoon of May 20th headed to the El Limón neighborhood—controlled by the Mara 18 gang—and that his trail disappeared shortly afterward. A red cap and a receipt with his name on it were found at the scene, confirming his identity and strengthening the investigation into the involvement of criminal organizations in the crime.[9] Following the recovery and identification of his body he was transferred to his hometown for burial. The funeral took place on May 28, 2024, in the village of Chacalté, Livingston, Izabal, where he was welcomed by family, neighbors, and hundreds of followers who gathered to pay their respects. The burial was marked by displays of collective mourning and was accompanied by ceremonies characteristic of the Q'eqchi' worldview.[10][11]
