Fatima Bakery and Store
Fatima Bakery and Store is a bakery in Bangalore which also houses a supermarket.[1] It was founded in 1957 on Leonard Road near Johnson Market by VP Francis and his brother VP Thomas who moved to Bangalore from Kerala.[2]
History[edit]
VF David, the son of VP Francis, claimed that his father named the bakery in 1957 after seeing the statue of ‘Lady Fatima’ from Portugal that was touring the world at that time.[2]
Before Fatima, Koshy’s was the only other place in Bangalore that sold baked goods.[1] VP Francis decided to open another bakery as many Anglo-Indian families depended on these baked goods.[1] At that time, the prices at Koshy’s were a little steep and therefore not everyone could afford them. Fatima broke even and gained success in just three years and made significant profits.[1]
Four years after the bakery opened, the Khata (legal identification document of property) of the land was transferred to Fatima bakery by Christian Solidarity Institution (CSI), an NGO that had owned the properties. “CSI was under the threat of losing the vacant land as the government had decided to acquire it.”[1]
Until the ownership was transferred, the owners of Fatima had to pay a minimum ground rent to CSI. There was no threat of acquisition once the property was developed.[1]
All Saints Bakery near Vellara Junction is considered as a competitor. When All Saints added a store section, Fatima expanded and added a supermarket section.[1]
Food[edit]
Fatima is known for its bread, rolls, biscuits, cakes, tarts with their bestsellers being mutton and chicken puffs.[2] Initially the bakery began by selling bread to the Anglo-Indian population. Even now it is one of their popular items. They have been supplying bread to Indian Coffee House for the last 50 years.[2]
Present[edit]
The original Fatima Bakery and Store closed in May 2019 due to the Metro station being constructed in the area.[2] Other enterprises such as Tom’s Hotel and Daniel Auto Garage also shut down.[1] A smaller outlet opened on 3 May 2019 opposite Sacred Heart church. Work is ongoing to get a bigger place near Bannerghatta road, an addition to their existing outlet in Koramangala.[2]
