Film Companion (FC) is a digital platform for entertainment journalism. It was founded by Anupama Chopra, an Indian critic and incumbent director of the Mumbai Film Festival.[1][2][3][4][5] Its Alexa ranking in India is 17,882 as of 24 April 2017.[6] Film Companion's main focus is film – Bollywood, Hollywood, World cinema, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Marathi. It has reviews of films, interviews, film festival news, features, masterclasses and their own web shows on their YouTube channel and website. Film Companion also covers television, short films, web series, OTT-platform content, comedy, cinema-related literature and, occasionally, non-film music.[4] Some of the senior editors of Film Companion are Baradwaj Rangan, Rahul Desai, Sucharita Tyagi and Nikhil Taneja.

History[edit]

Film Companion was founded in July 2014 by Anupama Chopra. The term was coined out of a line by the American philosopher Stanley Cavell: "The writing about film that has meant most to me has the power of a missing companion."[7]

Content[edit]

The Film Companion website deals with reviews, interviews, features and also caters to a niche demand for scripts of famous films in a weekly segment. Some of the scripts published have been Omkara and Rang De Basanti.[8][9] In 2016, Film Companion, along with Microsoft, created a show called "Beneath The Surface" hosted by Anupama Chopra starring Priyanka Chopra, Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar.[10] Film Companion held a Critics Poll consisting of 23 different critics. It received a lot of media recognition from publications including The Economic Times, Business Standard and India Samvad.[11][12][13][14]
