The First United Church of Cthulhu is a religious organization based on the Cthulhu Mythos and the writings of H. P. Lovecraft.
Formation[edit]
The First United Church of Cthulhu is a licensed and legally recognized nonprofit religious organization [1][2][3] based in Phoenix, Arizona. The church was established August 20, 2014 by Head Priest Khurt Khave, Archpriestess of Chaos Dee Astell, Archpriest of Chaos Hal C F Astell, and High Priestess Johnna Buttrick. But the worship of Cthulhu predates Lovecraft's work with the earliest reference dating 772 BC, originating in the ancient Mesopotamian city of Cuth /Cuthah (with variant spellings Kuth, Kutha, and Kutu),[4] though little has been unearthed at various expedition sites.[5][6]
Theology[edit]
Though the church worships the “dark gods” of the Cthulhu Mythos, one of their main tenants is cosmic indifference as espoused by Lovecraft,[7] that humans are insignificant in the larger scheme of the universe and for the most part are ignored by higher lifeforms.[8] They believe the night terrors that Lovecraft experienced which inspired his writings were caused by an overproduction of naturally-occurring endogenous dimethyltryptamine (DMT)[9] and that extraneous doses of DMT allows the user to visit these same alien worlds and communicate with the beings therein. Studies by doctor Rick Strassman[10] and ethnobotanist Terence McKenna [11][12] confirm such experiences in participating subjects. Several other religious groups in the United States practice similar ceremonial rites using DMT, notably the União do Vegetal and the Santo Daime, and the First United Church of Cthulhu is seeking the same religious freedoms and protections.[13][14]
Philosophy[edit]
The church accepts all people regardless of race, gender, sexual identity, nationality, species or dimension of origin. Followers do not have to give up any current faith or belief system; polytheism is an accepted part of the religion. The church has numerous members of the Discordianism and Dudeism faiths. They believe that all should get along and enjoy the time we have left because when Cthulhu returns we are all doomed.[15]
