Five Oceans is a Bulgarian film and television production company founded by Maria Bakalova and Julian Kostov in 2022.[1]

History[edit]

In August 2022, Maria Bakalova and Julian Kostov launched Five Oceans.[1] The company's name is a reference to Bulgaria's Golden Age, a period during which the country spread across three seas.[2] Its first production was the Bulgarian-Greek film Triumph from directors Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov.[1]

According to Deadline Hollywood, Bakalova and Kostov founded the company with the aim to tell Bulgarian, Balkan and Slavic stories and bring them to international audiences and advocate better representation for actors from Eastern Europe, as well as to normalize foreign accents on screen and shed the negative stereotypes often associated with characters from that region in Hollywood and other international productions.[1]
