Fomìnskiy Leonìd Pàvlovich (born 4 January 1944) in Volodymyr-Volynskyi of Volyn region in Ukraine. Leonid Pavlovich is a descendant of the Branicki family.

Biography[edit]

Early years[edit]

Leonid Fominsky is an academic and a member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences (RANS). He was born in western Ukraine in the city of Volodymyr-Volynskyi during World War II near the front line, only a few streets away from the action. On one occasion during artillery shelling of streets his father, Paul Jakovljevic Fominskiy was hit by small fragments of shrapnel. Fominskiy's father served in the Soviet military officer-Siberian (clarification needed). He was captured by the Germans in 1942, but later escaped from the concentration camps. While fleeing he hid in the house of Mary Stanislavovna Branicki, who traced her lineage to Count Branicki. The elderly Count Stanislaus was shot by the Germans in 1942, caught on the street in the curfew. Family hated the Nazis and took the Russian into their family. When in autumn of 1944 the city was taken by the Soviets, the NKVD came after Fominsky.

But instead of sending him to Kolyma, NKVD sent him to the front in the penal battalion. This wasn't any penal battalion, it was an army of the penalty box – 5th Shock Army (clarification needed). In the Army the father went through the Seelow Heights, took Berlin, stormed Hitler's Chancellery, all without sustaining any serious injuries or being wounded.

In 1946, Fominskiy's father returned from the war to his family in Volodymyr-Volynskyi, where he began teaching at the Teachers College. In 1957, he took his family to his home in the taiga settlement Suzun where Leonid Fominsky graduated from high school in 1960.

Love of engineering and technology[edit]

Leonid Pavlovich Fominsky graduated in 1970 from the Novosibirsk State University with a degree in Physics. He worked for 10 years at the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics, USSR Academy of Sciences where he developed the world’s first electron accelerators.

In 1973 he began work at the Novomoskovsk branch of the State Institute of Nitrogen Industry in Tula region, where he constructed two additional electron accelerators of his own design. There, as a young scientist he also worked on creation of powder with the help of water discharges, to create a catalyst used in powder metallurgy.

In 1975 Fominskiy was accused of Anti-Sovietism and received a year of probation, for having refused to speak at the meeting condemning academic Andrei Sakharov for his letter to Augusto Pinochet, who had orchestrated a coup d'état in Chile. He was subsequently rehabilitated in 1987 under Gorbachev.

In 1980 Fominskiy started work at the "Tulachermet", where he defended his thesis and was engaged in welding powder coating on the electron beam accelerators. Near Dnepropetrovsk town a plant was built for Fominskiy ’s plowshares surfacing technology. In collaboration with two academics (directors of institutes of the USSR) Leonid Fominskiy submitted an application for his discovery. In 1988 Fominskiy went to work in Cherkasy at "ROTOR ", where he worked on wastewater treatment by utilizing electro erosion powders.

In 1989 on personal invitation of the British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher he traveled to London to demonstrate the unique way of purifying water. But his work was cut short when the USSR collapsed in 1991.

For a couple of years Leonid Fominsky worked in Korea.

In 1993 Leonid Fominskiy was engaged in water treatment in Austria.

In 1999 he was elected as a foreign member of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. From 1988 until his retirement in 2004 he worked at the International STC "Payload " Space Objects in Space Committee, where he developed radically new heat generators.

L.Fominskiy and 2011 Fukushima disaster[edit]

When in 2011 the disaster struck Fukushima in Japan, Fominskiy wrote to the governments of Ukraine and Japan. In the letter he explained that Ukraine had special installations already working for a long time that could help quickly clean all of the radioactive effluents of Fukushima, instead of having them ejected into the sea. He did not receive a reply.

Books and awards[edit]

Leonid Pavlovich Fominskiy – a talented scientist, academician of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, and the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, an expert in physics, chemistry, metallurgy, power engineering, PhD, author of 10 books, has written 170 scientific publications and hold over 70 patents .

He was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus of the 2nd degree, the Russian Scientific Order « For Services» first degree, the highest award of RANS — " Knight of Science ", silver medal of A. Popov International Academy of discoveries and inventions, silver medal «10 years of Natural Sciences».

Death[edit]

After years of fighting skin cancer, Fominskiy Leonid Pavlovich died aged 64 on 18 September 2012. He left a huge number of scientific articles, discoveries and inventions for the human kind to learn from.
