The Forum for Open Research MENA (F.O.R.M) is a non-profit organisation that addresses key issues and supports the advancement of Open Research across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.[1]
The first annual Forum for Open Research in MENA was founded on October 26, 2022, and was organised by Kamran Robert Kardan, Founder of the Knowledge E Foundation, with host partner the Egyptian Knowledge Bank and advisory partner UNESCO.[2]
Description
The Forum for Open Research MENA was created to accelerate the adoption of Open Science in the MENA region. The first annual forum event took place in Cairo, Egypt, featuring 50 speakers and over 1,100 delegates from over 48 countries.[3]
The first annual Forum for Open Research MENA also marked the launch of UNESCO’s new Arab Science Podium, an initiative designed to promote scientific cooperation and advance UNESCO’s science agenda across the Arab region.[4]
Qualified endorsement for the Forum for Open Research MENA was received from key stakeholders and organisations, including the Qatar National Library, Khalifa University, the Association of Arab Universities, ALECSO, as well as interest from the Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN).[5]
Forum for Open Research MENA 2022
The Forum for Open Research MENA 2022 featured keynote speakers Dr Abdulaziz Almuzaini, Director of UNESCO, Dr. Tarek Shawki, Former Minister of Education and Technical Education and Supervisor of Egyptian Knowledge Bank Project (EKB), and His Excellency Dr Mohamed Ould Amar, Director-General of ALECSO.[6] The 2022 Forum was held in Cairo, Egypt, between the 26th-27th of October 2022. Forum for Open Research MENA 2023
The theme for the 2023 Forum for Open Research 2023 is Democratising Knowledge: The evolution of open science research ecosystems and research communities in the Arab World.[8] The 2023 Forum will be held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, between the 23rd-24th of October 2023. [9] The Forum for Open Research MENA 2023 is organised by the Knowledge E Foundation with support from UNESCO, Khalifa University, and supported by Crossref, DOAJ, and Emerald Publishing. [10]
