The platform was founded just before the G20 Summit in Hamburg in 2017, with 30 international foundations and NGOs initially.[3][4][5] Today F20 incorporates more than 60 foundations from around the world[6].[7][8][2]

F20 and its members call for joint, transnational action towards sustainable development, along positive transformation examples to provide pathways towards mitigating climate change and a just transition towards sustainable development, based on renewable energy.[9][10] The network understands its duty as a bridge builder between civil society, the business and financial sector, think tanks and politics.[2][11]

The Secretary General is Stefan Schurig and the Chair is Klaus Milke.[8][2]

F20 members are divided into the Steering Group and Partner Circle.

Events[edit]

The Foundations Platform F20 hosts various events throughout the year, including side events at different UN conferences such as the COP. The general meeting of the network is the F20 High-Level Forum.[2]

F20 High-Level Forum (F20 HLF)[edit]

Since its founding, F20 has organized four F20 High-Level Forums just before the G20 summits in the respective host countries.[2] Due to Coronavirus pandemic, the 4th F20 HLF 2020 set to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, the platform organized a virtual F20 Climate Solutions Week[12][13].[14]

F20 Climate Solutions Week 2020[edit]

The F20 Climate Solutions Week 2020 took place from September 14-17, 2020. Under the headline of "Resilience and Recovery: Highlighting Solutions for the G20 on Climate and Sustainability!," the event was co-hosted by the King Khalid Foundation and supported by the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt and the German Federal Environmental Foundation. Some of the speakers include Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina Wazed. UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment Dr. Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi, German Minister of Finance and Vice-Chancellor Olaf Scholz, former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and Board Member of the German Central Bank Sabine Mauderer among others[15].[16]

F20 Climate Solutions Forum 2021[edit]

The F20 Climate Solutions Forum 2021 is entitled "Green Recovery, Sustainable Finance, Just Transition: Putting Words into Deeds" and co-organized by Fondazione Cariplo, in collaboration with other partner foundations of F20 - Unipolis Foundation, Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation and Fondazione di Comunità di Messina - and with the support of Assifero, ASviS and ACRI[17].[18]

The objective of the Climate Solutions Forum is to indicate possible priorities, identify challenges and opportunities in the fight against climate change and in the development of resilience in a post-Covid world[17].[18]

Publications[edit]

In addition to advocacy work, the Foundations Platform F20 also publishes different reports with support from international organizations, institutions and universities.[2]

Reports[edit]

Acceleratig the Global and Local Paradigm Shift[edit]

This report was written in cooperation with the French think tank IDDRI in 2017.[19][20] It analyzes the emerging energy transition towards efficient and renewable energy systems at global level and in specific G20 countries. The F20 Report, including country speicifc case studies offers recommendations for the G20 countries as well as foundations for the enhancement of sustainability and the mitigation of global temperature rise.[20]

Aligning G20 Infrastructure Investment with Climate Goals & the 2030 Agenda[edit]

This report was written in cooperation with the Global Development Policy Center at Boston University amd the Brookings Institution in 2019.[21][22] The F20 Report encompasses a framework for ‘sustainable infrastructure’ that is aligned with the SDGs and Paris commitments. According to the report, investment in sustainable infrastructure falls short by $3.2 trillion annually.[23]

The Nexus Report: Nature Based Solutions to the Biodiversity and Climate Crisis[edit]

This report was lead-authored by Charles Barber from the World Resources Institute and written in cooperation with the SEE Foundation and the Wyss Campaign for Nature in 2020[24].[25][26]

The report summarizes the contours of the intertwined global environmental challenges, proposes an integrated strategy for addressing those challenges, and makes recommendations for action in the UNFCCC and the CBD. Moreover, it provides recommendations to the G20 on how it can catalyze and complement action in these conventions and thereby help ensure that COVID-19 response and recovery strategies do in fact “build back better” for both planet and people. The report’s main conclusions and key recommendations are:

  • Nature is under assault.
  • Conserving and restoring nature is critical for achieving the sustainable development agenda.
  • Primary forests and coastal ecosystems are the highest priority.
  • COVID-19 has demonstrated the cost of imbalances between people and nature.
  • Meeting global biodiversity, climate and COVID-19 recovery challenges requires Nature-based Solutions.
  • Nature-based Solutions come in many variations, but protection and strengthening of the ecological integrity of natural ecosystems must lie at their core.
  • Securing the role of nature in addressing the intertwined global climate, biodiversity, public health, and sustainable development crises requires a threefold approach: Protect, restore and connect.
