The Prof. Otto Beisheim Stiftungen (also known as Beisheim Stiftungen) are two non-profit, legally independent foundations based in Baar, Switzerland and Munich, Germany.

History[edit]

The foundations were established by Otto Beisheim. The Swiss foundation was established in 1975 and the German foundation in 1976. Both are legally independent entities and have their own companies that manage and invest their own assets. After his death in 2013, Beisheim bequeathed his assets to the two foundations.[5]

Activities[edit]

Programme areas[edit]

In order to continue Beisheim's philanthropic commitment,[6] the two foundations develop their own programs and support projects to promote education, health care, sports and culture.[7]

Selected projects in Switzerland[edit]

The Beisheim Foundation in Switzerland offers a first-aid concept for mental health under the name ensa, together with the Pro Mente Sana Foundation.[8] Furthermore, the Beisheim Foundation co-funded the Freiwilligen-Monitor 2020 (volunteer report) in Switzerland, which presents the latest figures as well as developments on volunteering in Switzerland.[9] In the area of culture, the Swiss foundation supports the Konferenz Bildschulen Schweiz, a nationally active umbrella organisation of art and design schools for children and young people.[10]

Selected projects in Germany[edit]

The Beisheim Foundation in Germany supports the Duisburg-based Impact Factory, a start-up incubator that supports around 20 young entrepreneurs with social ambitions each year to develop a viable business model.[11] The Centre for Prevention and Sports Medicine at the Technical University of Munich is developing a holistic program for physical training in senior facilities. The pilot project, called bestform. Sport knows no age is sponsored by the Beisheim Foundation.[12] With "ich bin alles", the Beisheim Foundation, in cooperation with the LMU Klinikum, has launched a digital information portal on the topic of depression and mental health in children and adolescents.[13] Together with the Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, the foundation has been offering mental health first aid courses in Germany since 2020 under the Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) project.[14]

WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management[edit]

The German business school WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, located in Vallendar near Koblenz, was founded in 1984 on the initiative of the Koblenz Chamber of Commerce and Industry as Wissenschaftliche Hochschule für Unternehmensführung. The name was changed in 1993 to honour WHU's benefactor Otto Beisheim, after he had donated DM 50 million to the business school. Beisheim continued to support the institution thereafter.[5][6]
