First Mode is an American multinational decarbonization company that designs, manufactures, and distributes alternative fuel and battery engines for heavy duty vehicles, along with hydrogen refueling equipment. Its headquarters are in London, England. The company has operations in Africa, Australia, Europe, North America and South America.

It has been named one of Built In Seattle’s Best Places to Work in 2020,[1] 2021,[2] 2022,[3] and 2023.[4] First Mode received GeekWire’s Innovation of the Year award in 2022[5] for the creation of the world’s largest hybrid powerplant, later additionally winning Fast Company’s 2023 World Changing Ideas awards.[6]

History[edit]

First Mode was founded on March 14, 2018 in the Seattle, Washington area by 11 former members of asteroid mining company Planetary Resources. Several of the co-founders were engineers from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, including Chris Voorhees, the recipient of NASA’s Exceptional Achievement[7] and Exceptional Engineering Achievement[8] medals.

The company was named after the concept of a first mode, which is the fundamental vibration pattern of an object or system, characterized by the lowest frequency and the greatest amplitude. The name is a nod to the company’s engineering background, as the first mode is often what determines how structures interact with one another.

First Mode partnered with mining corporation Anglo American plc in 2019, signing a three-year agreement to develop a diesel alternative for the company’s fleet of mining haul trucks.[9]

On May 6, 2022, First Mode and Anglo American debuted the world’s first and largest hydrogen-powered mine haul truck at the Mogalakwena platinum mine in South Africa with a converted Komatsu 930E Haulpak truck.[10] The launch was attended by President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa.[11]

First Mode announced the creation of a proving grounds for product testing in October 2022.[12] Located in Centralia, Washington, it is at a former TransAlta mine site. The Washington State Department of Commerce awarded First Mode a $250,000 grant in February 2023 to support the continued development of the site and its facilities.[13]

In January 2023, First Mode and Anglo American announced the signing of a $200 million binding agreement to combine First Mode with the Anglo American nuGen team, thereby making Anglo American the majority shareholder.[14] The two companies also signed a supply agreement for First Mode to provide Anglo American with several additional hybrid powerplant retrofit kits for mining haul trucks.[15]

In July 2023, First Mode announced the construction of its first manufacturing facility in Seattle, Washington.[16] The 45,000 square-foot factory will produce zero-emission powerplants and associated ground infrastructure for the company’s nuGen haulage solutions, which replace diesel engines in mining haul trucks and locomotives by retrofitting customer’s existing fleets with battery and hydrogen fuel cell solutions.[17]
