Fred Rimmy was a fictional English footballer who played as a midfielder and appeared in the We are United comic strip in the British boys' comic Champ and the Football Picture Monthly Story. He first appeared in February 1984. His fact file on Champ was number 3 in 1984. Rimmy was United’s captain from 1984 until 1993.

Career

Club

He was born in 1958. In 1975, aged 17, he signed for United under manager Ron Boston and had Joe Pearson and Tug Wilson as teammates. Rimmy was part of the 1979 winning team in the European Cup final in Rome and celebrated 3 straight championships with United from 1977 until 1979. In 82/83 United got relegated and Rimmy followed the team to the Second Division. Once Pearson took over as a manager, he became the new captain. Rimmy played for United until 1993 when he signed for a lower division club.

International

Rimmy won his first cap for England against Hungary in 1981. He earned 9 caps until 1983, then his formed slumped and then United’s relegation meant that he didn’t receive more call ups, which was one of his goals. The 1981 Hungary game was the biggest thrill of his career (Champ, 1984).

Style of play

Rimmy was a midfielder, in a deep role and more defensive style. He was the backbone of the team. A midfield man of poise and vision.

Legacy

Undoubtedly one of United’s legends since 1975, serving the club as player, and captain for 9 years. He was very loyal to United and lifted numerous trophies for the club, domestic and international.

In 1984 he was already married, a family man. He was a Manchester United supporter.
